EPR Architects has masterfully restored, extended, and reimagined The Old War Office (OWO) building, transforming the Grade II* listed former government headquarters into an extraordinary destination. The project, now home to Raffles London at The OWO, features a five-star luxury hotel, 85 private residences, a range of restaurants and bars, and the prestigious Guerlain spa and health club, complete with an extensive gym and a 20-meter pool.

The meticulous restoration by EPR Architects preserves the building’s historical grandeur while infusing it with modern luxury. From the grand staircase to the mosaic-tiled floors, Raffles London at The OWO honours the building’s storied past while offering a timeless, luxurious experience. The hotel boasts 120 rooms, including 39 suites and five Heritage Suites, spread over five expansive floors. These suites, formerly offices of prominent political and military leaders, were introduced by EPR to create a more spacious and open floor plan.

Among the Heritage Suites, The Haldane Suite once hosted Secretary of State for War Lord Haldane, and The Churchill Suite was originally the Army Council Room. EPR faced the challenge of preserving and enhancing these historically significant rooms while integrating contemporary luxury and modern innovations.

A standout in this meticulous restoration is The Granville Suite, formerly the levee rooms, where the head of the British Army once had his office. The suite pays homage to Christine Granville, rumored to be Churchill’s favorite spy. EPR Architects meticulously restored this room, celebrating its period features such as rich wood paneling, giant oak casement windows, opulent arched ceilings, and antique fireplaces. The suite is now a luxurious destination, richly furnished in a neo-classical style with modern amenities.

The Granville Suite’s bathroom exemplifies refined contemporary elegance while respecting the room’s heritage. The space features modern mirrors with adjustable lighting, stand-alone marble sinks, and a show-stopping free-standing brass bathtub. Soft furnishings like a chaise lounge and chairs add a touch of comfort and style.

EPR Architects collaborated with the late Thierry Despont, who brought personality to The Granville Suite, embracing the charm of the OWO’s history. Despont’s design introduced soft and feminine interiors, with floral upholstery in lemony shades, adding warmth and softening the room’s ministerial past.

The transformation of The Old War Office by EPR Architects is a testament to their expertise in blending historical preservation with contemporary luxury, creating a unique and inviting space that honours the past while looking forward to the future.
