EY DESIGN has completed a luxury residential project in Chiba that reimagines a former quarry as an immersive hilltop retreat where architecture and interiors work together to deepen the connection to the surrounding landscape. Located around one hour from central Tokyo, the villa occupies an elevated site with sweeping views across Tokyo Bay and distant mountain ridgelines, offering a powerful sense of place shaped by the land itself.
From the outset, EY DESIGN developed a clear and consistent interior design narrative rooted in the site’s topography and industrial past, working in close dialogue with the architectural team, Katsuma Tai Architect & Associates (Tai and Associates).
The history of cutting and carving stone informed the interior concept, titled Memory of the Quarry, shaping material selections, spatial atmospheres and detailing throughout the interiors. Responding to the dynamic roof lines and ridgeline forms defined by the architecture, the same geometric rhythms and material language continue seamlessly inside, guiding choices in finishes, bespoke furniture, lighting and soft furnishings.
