Hancock Architects has expertly transformed Queen, an 1872 heritage shop in Woollahra, into a glamorous and light-filled family sanctuary. Nestled on one of the suburb’s most vibrant streets, the project reimagines the historic building as a private courtyard-style home tailored to the needs of its new owners and their young adult children.

The design began with a meticulous restoration of the shop’s original façade, carefully reinstating its heritage detailing to preserve its street presence. To create a tranquil family space behind the bustling streetscape, Hancock Architects introduced a new entry tucked discreetly to the side, concealed by a detailed metal gate. Unsympathetic modern additions at the rear were removed, making way for an expansive family living space seamlessly connected to a landscaped private courtyard.

Central to the home is a dramatic double-height ceiling void over the Family/Living Room, a key feature that floods the space with natural light through oversized glazing. This void also connects the home’s spaces, incorporating Juliette balconies that link the upper-level bedrooms and sitting areas with the heart of the home. The design balances grandeur and intimacy by merging old-world charm with contemporary functionality.

Highly tactile materials enhance the home’s inviting atmosphere, including revived timber beams salvaged from abandoned wharfs and antique timber doors sourced from Northern Africa. These are complemented by modern steel balustrades and soft French wash finishes.

Queen’s thoughtful redesign reflects Hancock Architects’ ability to blend heritage preservation with modern living. Behind its restored façade, the home offers a serene and cohesive retreat, making it a compelling and timeless addition to Woollahra’s residential streetscape. For passersby, the shop’s historic charm remains; for its owners, it’s a light-filled haven.
