The Montenotte Hotel Woodland Suites

Henry J Lyons’ design for The Montenotte Woodland Suites redefines eco-luxury hospitality, seamlessly integrating ten bespoke suites into Cork’s historic landscape. Commissioned by The Montenotte Hotel, the project demanded a sensitive architectural response that would regenerate a declining landscape while delivering an immersive guest experience.

The scheme includes five elevated Woodland ‘Nest’ Suites, four River Suites, and a communal Clubhouse—each designed for privacy, accessibility, and deep connection with nature. Henry J Lyons responded with a treehouse-inspired approach, raising the Woodland Suites on engineered stilts to minimise ground disturbance and preserve the woodland ecosystem.

The brief placed environmental stewardship at its core, requiring the removal of invasive species, introduction of native planting, and creation of wildlife corridors. The use of natural materials, including blackened spruce cladding and sedum roofs, ensures harmony with the surroundings, while carefully framed views and elevated walkways enhance the sensory arrival sequence.

Design challenges posed by the steep site were addressed through innovative accessibility strategies, allowing all guests to experience the woodland setting. Specialist skills brought the vision to life, including traditional timber treatment, bespoke stone carving, complex structural engineering, expert arboriculture, and custom craftsmanship by local artisans.

The dual-typography concept maximises each location’s potential: River Suites overlook meadows, while Woodland Suites immerse guests in the canopy. Henry J Lyons’ thoughtful design not only elevates The Montenotte Hotel’s offering but also revitalises the landscape, setting a benchmark for sustainable luxury and proving that architectural innovation can deliver both ecological and commercial value.
