Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Having worked alongside my father for many years in his kitchen company I received first hand education on real projects which was invaluable experience that has taught me the principles of design. Taking over the company gave me the opportunity to grow and develop by employing highly skilled staff. We work together collaboratively and learn continually from one another.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My personal style and one that we strive for as a company is classic luxury. I believe in timeless elegance using quality materials that can be adapted to suit a more contemporary or more traditional taste accordingly.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration comes from a variety of different areas, from looking at traditional and contemporary interiors and kitchens across the eras. I take a lot of inspiration from the past but always strive to use this as a reference and interpret it for modern day.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

I think that we are in an age where design is not based upon passing trends or fads but on something that has more longevity. It appears that design is at a stage where aesthetics are not the primary focus and the way that interiors make the client feel are equally important. The feeling of comfort, warmth, security and interiors that evoke a memory or sentimentality are all key considerations. Successful interior design should act as a back drop for client’s possessions that all have an important backstory and grow and evolve with the individual.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

Sustainability, functionality, aesthetics, fine detailing and quality artisanal craftsmanship.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Less is more.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

We believe that awards such as this are important because they give recognition to and showcase the talents of designers and fabricators from all across the globe. Furthermore, it showcases the wealth of talent that rural areas of the small island of Ireland has to offer. It brings these small companies and artisans alike to the forefront allowing them to get recognition at a global level.

What projects are you currently working on?

We are working on some really exciting projects at the moment that vary from total re-design of the interior spaces to more functional ways of living and kitchens for families to get together. It is really exciting that we get to work on such different projects with some lovely clients who really embrace the Canavan’s look together with their own personal style. We are also in the midst of a full showroom refurb and look forward to a launch later this year.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

It would be hard to pick a favourite project as they are all unique. However, one that stands out is “Luminance Symphony” for the key reason that we had architectural input in the re-design of the house which allowed us to consider the cabinetry in sync with the architectural space which resulted in the best possible layout and look.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

The most challenging was “A Southern welcome” due to the fact that there were a lot of other craftsmen involved, for example the metal artisan fabricators, upholsterers and this added an additional level of complexity in managing and meeting deadlines etc.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

I could not live without our in-house designers who offer exceptional skill and are continually pushing the boundaries of design. We could not live without the service of a quality stone supplier that continually is sourcing new and stunning luxury quartzites marbles etc. The craftsmanship offered by our cabinet makers and fitting team is also very crucial and they bring our designs to life.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

We have an exciting new launch to look forward to in the next couple of months. From there our aims as a business will be to continually push the level of design that we are capable of and develop new designs and new details bespoke to Canavan Interiors. Thinking creatively and out of the box to enhance spaces and re-design the standard for interiors.
