Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Born in St Asaph, Flintshire, graduated with distinction from University of Cambridge and trained at Sheppard Robson Architects before completing his professional accreditation at Sir Terry Farrell & Company. Following internships at architectural firms in Sydney and New York, he joined the late great Franklin D. Israel’s office in Los Angeles working in association with Frank O. Gehry as Project Architect on a 10,000sqft new-build private residence at Broad Beach, Malibu. Since returning to London to launch Garnett Architecture in the early 1990s, Christian has completed many successful and award winning projects for property investors, leading developers and Great Estates. Clients’ aspirations and achievements are Christian’s lifeblood, and he enjoys long-standing client collaborations which have lasted more than 20 years.

How would you describe your personal design style?

Contemporary classic with an edge.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Travel & Culture.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Wellbeing, Quiet Luxury & Green Living.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2024 and beyond.

Zellige tiles, earthy colours, natural materials, courtyards, graphic patterns, curved geometries, Carlo Scarpa!

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Know what you like.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

Huge!

What projects are you currently working on?

Luxury homes in Knightsbridge, Belgravia, Mayfair, Marylebone, Hampstead, a hotel in Covent Garden.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

House refurbishment In Regents Park- wonderful decisive clients, easy to work with, great taste, open to creative ideas, and fantastic art collection to design around all within a beautiful Grade II Listed townhouse.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Double basement extension In Chelsea- with very involved neighbours scrutinising every detail- ultimate test of patience but most satisfying to see through!

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

My iPad and Apple Pencil.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Seize the moment, raise the profile of Garnett Architecture, break new ground & make new friends.

Your most treasured possession?

My dog Horatio.

Your favourite holiday destination?

Sri Lanka.

Galle Fort Hotel, Sri Lanka.

Book: ‘The Leopard’ by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa;

Film: ‘The English Patient’;

Song: ‘Never Was’ by Henry Charles. I am a romantic!

Your favourite food and drink.

Sea Bass & Rose.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

Drawing in my studio listening to Radio Paradise.

A bass player in a rock band.
