Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

After earning my undergraduate degree in interior design from Sam Houston State University, I began my career in the design industry in 2005. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience and knowledge working as an interior designer for local area builders and design firms in Houston, Texas. With over 19 years of design experience, I established my design studio in February 2021, following the launch of my company, Design L’Atelier, in May 2020. My design studio undertakes projects across the Houston area and the United States. My work has been featured in LUXE Interiors + Design and Modern Luxury Interiors Houston. I am also proud to represent an ambassador of New York Design Center’s What’s New What’s Next program from 2021 to 2024 and was honored as Luxe Magazine’s Next in Design 99 in 2023. In addition to my professional work, I dedicate my spare time to volunteering for the American Society of Interior Designers as the Chair-Elect on the Chapter Leaders committee, which supports chapters across the United States.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My style is classic yet refined, much like our interiors. I strive to create balance using scale, proportion, and symmetry, and I complement these elements with harmonious hues and textures. Texture mix, tailored lines, and a sophisticated color palette form the core of my style.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

I believe that the best design inspiration is found through travel. Our concept of luxury is centered around travel, both domestically and internationally. Exploring architecture, textiles, and finishes from different locations influences our approach to projects. My team and I pay close attention to every detail, infusing each project with unique touches that resonate with our clients.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Design trends are leaning towards creating warm, cozy, and welcoming spaces. Clients are looking for designs that make their entire family feel comfortable at home. To meet this demand, my firm uses durable textiles and finishes that can withstand the wear and tear from kids and pets. There’s also a growing interest in designing homes to accommodate multi-generational families, with in-law apartments and suites being integrated into new builds and renovations. Additionally, there’s a noticeable increase in the focus on sustainability, with the use of antiques and repurposed furniture giving interior spaces a fresh and collected look.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

1.) Function. Does the design function and make sense for our client?
2.) Longevity. We have a preference of specifying quality products that have longevity. We love that these pieces can be passed down from generation to generation, becoming a part of our client’s family story.
3.) Direct reflection of client. Our clients value customization that reflects their lifestyle, and we keep this principle in mind throughout the project.
4.) Cohesive. The design should tell a complete story and be cohesive.
5.) Refinement. While every client and project embodies its own interpretation of luxury and elegance, we have established a robust design foundation and process that integrates these elements for each client

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?

Trust the design process! It is there for a reason. We understand that working with abstract ideas and concepts can be challenging, but having faith in us and the process we’ve created goes a long way. Seeing it through to the end is essential to our daily work.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

Recognition from prestigious awards like the International Design and Architecture Awards is a testament to the exceptional quality of work produced. To be acknowledged on a global scale, alongside talented peers in the industry, is a truly remarkable achievement that reflects the highest standards of design and architecture.

What projects are you currently working on?

We are currently working on a two renovation project in Tanglewood, a neighborhood in Houston, that we are very excited about. We currently have a project in progress Atlanta, Georgia. Our Miami Beach project will pick back up early next year and we can’t wait to see this one completed.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

That’s a difficult question! While we love all of our projects, one in particular stands out. It’s our client’s vacation home, which we fondly refer to as the “barndominum” project. This home is a true reflection of our client: unique, practical, and full of life. It incorporates a blend of European aesthetics and a strong Americana influence. You may be surprised by the choice of wall coverings in the utility or powder room. This project commenced during the pandemic and was completed in the summer of 2023. It stands as one of our initial completed projects for LEHID.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Every project comes with its own set of challenges. Nevertheless, we take great joy in seeing the intricate details we designed on paper being brought to life. We meticulously review architectural details, coordinate with trades and vendors, and overcome challenges to achieve the final result. This process may take time and extend the timeline, but the end result makes it all worthwhile.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Our professional goals for the coming year are to complete the projects we started in 2023 and to initiate new projects scheduled to begin in January or February 2025. We also aim to enhance the presence of our design studio and to attend The International Design & Architecture Awards.

Your most treasured possession?

My gold starfish pendant necklace is a meaningful piece of jewelry given to me by my parents. I wear it every day as it holds sentimental value, symbolizing my roots and serving as my very first piece of jewelry as a young teen.

Your favourite holiday destination?

My favorite holiday destination is Greece. The scenery is stunning, and the architecture is beautiful. Plus, the food is amazing!

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

Hotel: The Ned London or NYC
Restaurant: This is hard as there are so many great restaurants in Houston. I can’t pick just one!
Bar: Any place where they make the martini extra cold and the people watching is top notch!

Your favourite book, film & song?

Film: My favorite film is The Holiday. I watch it every year at Christmas.

Your favourite food and drink?

Food: Seafood
Drink: Sparkling Water; Favorite Cocktail: Martini

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

The favorite way to spend an afternoon is on a patio, wine glass in hand with family.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would you alternative profession be?

I would still work in a creative field. Fashion has always intrigued me. I took sewing classes as a kid, so the idea of designing a couture house would be amazing! Graphic design would be a close second.
