Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

I studied at Deakin University in Australia and after a few years beginning my Architectural Journey I moved to London to develop my career and experience Europe. Intended on only being a short stay I ended up in London for over 10 years, having the opportunity to design and build many typologies of buildings including education, healthcare, commercial and most recently sports and entertainment.

I now find myself in Southeast Asia, continuing my career in sports, entertainment, convention, exhibition and aviation projects across APAC.

How would you describe your personal design style?

I think my design style is highly driven by simplicity and by functional data driven input. I believe that things do not need to be overly intricate to be beautiful. Having said that, each project and design challenge should be assessed on its individual merits and the outcomes should not be limited to a a style. The Londoner project was one where our interiors team appropriately followed a detailed and refined style, and the outcomes are tremendous.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

I believe that inspiration for design should be highly engrained in the context of place. It can come from many things but should always be relatable even if converse to its context.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

With the type of buildings I deal with, design is moving more towards the experiential. Our access to the world with our smart devices and connectivity makes it so that building design must be memorable, not just for the building itself, but for the experiences it provides.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2024 and beyond.

– Experiential design

– Urbanisation

– Sustainability

– Adaptability

– Smart systems and technology integration

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Always have a clear story to tell about your design. Something tangible and believable. We are not all designers and having a story to test your scheme against adds gravitas to what you are trying to say.

What projects are you currently working on?

– A 15k seat arena in a globally recognisable Integrated Resort.

– A 30k seat stadium on the Marina in Singapore.

– The redevelopment of an Olympic Park site in Seoul including 100k sqm of convention and exhibition space, a 30k seat baseball stadium, and 11k seat arena.

– A new 14k seat Arena in Macau.

– A regional sports facility in the heartlands of Singapore.

– Various other Sports and Entertainment projects across APAC.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

All competitions are good for the health of an industry.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

My favourite project, which is currently under construction is the redevelopment of the grandstand at Marina Bay in Singapore into a state-of-the-art 30k seat stadium with amazing back drop of the Singapore City skyline. It is a simply stunning project on a majorly prominent site that promises to be an iconic and globally recognised building. The project is called NS Square and is due for completion late 2027.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Both challenging and rewarding, Jewel at Changi Airport definitely stretched me due to its amazingly complex geometries through out. We were constantly designing on this project and believe the outcome was worth it.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

I love my iPad and my headphones – my space to design.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

To stay happy, healthy, and loving what I’m doing.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

Your most treasured possession?
This would have to be my bicycle. A Covid investment that I just love.

Your favourite holiday destination?

It’s been a while, but my favourite holiday destination has always been Italy, anywhere in Italy!

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

The Standard Hotel in New York. First date with my wife and full of memories.

Your favourite book, film & song?

I am a big fan of music and love the alternative scene that existed in and around the 90’s.

My favourite song would have to be Cody, by Mogwai – It’s morbid but beautiful.

As for movies, as cliché as it is, I am a huge fan of the Shawshank Redemption. It’s the favourite of many for a good reason I think.

Your favourite food and drink?

Pasta, pasta and more pasta! Paired with a solid red and I am in a good place.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

Drinks, Friends, and Family.
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

It is hard to imagine doing anything else but I guess I would be in the hospitality industry or events.
