Tell us a little about your background in design:
I have an honors degree in Interior Architecture and studied in both Dublin, Ireland, and Essex, England. I moved to England just over 10 years ago with an Irish company, but after a while, I wanted to broaden my experience, so I worked with several design firms. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and build my reputation in the industry. In 2023, I finally took the leap and set up Shane Nicholas Design, bringing my passion and experience to life in my own way.

How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal design style leans towards dark and moody, with a strong influence from the atmospheric vibe of a speakeasy. That said, I believe every project should reflect my client’s vision, not mine. I adapt my approach to suit their preferred style, ensuring the final result feels uniquely theirs. Listening to my clients is key—I’d rather create something meaningful to them than impose my own style too heavily.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Design is always evolving, so I believe you never stop studying interiors. As styles grow and develop, I make it a priority to stay up to date with the work of top designers. Right now, I’m particularly inspired by Jake Arnold in Los Angeles—his work is incredibly refined and thoughtful, which resonates with my own approach to design.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I feel design is returning to the kind of home comforts we cherished years ago. Hopefully, we’re moving past the phase where rooms were designed entirely around technology. After spending hours working and staring at screens, people now want interiors that feel warm and comforting, almost like a hug from their surroundings, rather than spaces focused on even more tech.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
Sustainability
More than ever, people care about the planet, and that’s shaping design. Using eco-friendly materials, like reclaimed wood and recycled metals, and focusing on energy-efficient solutions will only grow in importance.

Wellness
Homes are becoming more about feeling good, both mentally and physically. Think calming colors, natural light, and even bringing the outside in with plants and organic textures—it’s all about creating spaces that help people relax and recharge.

Personalization
People want their homes to tell their story. Adding personal touches, like custom furniture or decor that reflects their interests and memories, is becoming a key part of design. It’s about making spaces feel truly theirs.

Smart Technology
Technology is everywhere, and interiors are no exception. From smart lighting to hidden tech solutions, the goal is to blend functionality and style so it feels effortless and not overwhelming.

Flexible Spaces
With more people working from home or needing adaptable spaces, designs that can serve multiple purposes—like a home office that transforms into a guest room—are becoming a must.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
My one piece of advice would be to always stay grounded and really listen to your clients. No matter how many awards or magazine features you achieve, you wouldn’t get there without truly understanding and delivering what your clients want on each and every project.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The International Design & Architecture Awards mean a lot to me. I was lucky enough to be there in 2022 and share the room with some truly amazing designers. It’s honestly one of the best recognitions in the industry, and the whole experience was incredibly inspiring.

What projects are you currently working on?
I’m working on a few exciting projects at the moment, but the one I’m most excited about is the “Butterfly House.” It’s going to be something truly remarkable, though it won’t be finished until 2026. Be sure to follow my socials for updates along the way!

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Over the last few months, I’ve worked on some incredible projects, but my personal favorite has to be the Obsidian Bar. So much passion went into it, and it was a real joy to take a step back with a cocktail and just take in the space I helped create.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
The most challenging project I’ve worked on recently was a penthouse overlooking Regents Park. We were working with a tight schedule, and of course, with a project of that scale, there were a few obstacles along the way. One of the biggest challenges was the size of the elevator, which I’m sure every designer can relate to!

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies
There are a few products and services I couldn’t live without when designing. Buster and Punch is a personal favorite of mine—they always offer such quality and style. For my next project, I’m really excited to work with Noel and Marquet, especially for their beautiful coving and skirting. It’s always about finding the right pieces that elevate a space.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
Over the next 12 months, my main goal is to complete my first full project in Mallorca. I’ve already completed two designs, and we’re just waiting for a start date, so I’m really excited about the opportunity and what’s to come!

Your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession? Definitely my wet gear. Not only does it make me feel prepared for my annual golf trip back home to Ireland (because, let’s face it, it always rains), but it’s also come to the rescue during a few client site visits.

Your favourite holiday destination?
My favorite holiday destination is definitely Mallorca. It’s an incredible place with so much to offer, and I’ve always dreamed of calling it my second home one day. The mix of beautiful scenery, culture, and amazing food—it’s hard to beat!

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
When it comes to food, it has to be Roly’s in Ballsbridge, Dublin—always incredible. For hotels, my go-to is Milsoms in Dedham; we visit at least once a year during the summer, and it’s always a treat. As for a bar, I love any spot in Old Leigh, Essex—there’s just something about the scenery that makes it perfect for a relaxing drink.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
If I happen to get an afternoon off, you’ll often find me on the golf course. It’s the perfect way to unwind—well, as long as I can keep the ball in bounds!
