Bomhoff Limited has been shortlisted for the Bespoke Cabinetry/Installation Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.

Bomhoff Limited presents Stingray Monument, a custom bedside cabinet manufactured with aviation honeycomb composite, reconstituted wood veneer, grospoint lining and certified sustainably sourced shagreen. The purpose of this project was to create a unique modern bedside monument that would function both as an elegant nightstand and storage unit while maintaining the highest standards of aviation cabinetry craftsmanship.

The three drawers lined with black grospoint are large enough to hold blankets and pillows or common personal items. The aviation slides allow the drawers to move smoothly while integrated push latches guarantee a quiet close. The drawers are curved around the main shell, creating a solid and fully integrated form. Gold leaf drawer pulls lend a jewelry-like luxury when juxtaposed on the dark ebony veneer.

The style of the nightstand is modern but incorporates elements from the natural world that serve to give the piece a softer touch while adding an element of design interest. A “Steinway” ebony shine was sought for the outer shell of the monument in order to convey a sophisticated visual appeal. The dark wood veneer has subtle texture with a rich grain that pops when the monument is illuminated but otherwise fades softly into the background, allowing the natural pewter hued shagreen and gold accents to provide a remarkable visual quality.

The sustainably sourced shagreen is extremely durable and provides a fascinating focal point, with each hand cut hide containing a grain pattern that seem to mirror one another while also being completely unique. The nightstand can be expected to encounter significant use, thus the choice of a shagreen top in order to provide both protection for the cabinet and a slight grip to prevent objects such as glasses from shifting during turbulence or rough seas.

The bedside cabinet blends together three different visual and tactile surfaces to serve a palette of refined taste while also being highly functional. The contrast between natural and manufactured elements creates a sense of material diversity and refinement worthy of the finest VVIP bedroom interiors.
