Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)
I am an architect, with more than 30 years of experience with both sailing and motor yachts. I have established a long cooperation with Fontana Maletto, and approx. 12 years with Wally Yachts, together with my wife Alessandra Negrato who is responsible in our office for the interior design.
How would you describe your personal design style?
Our history comes from long ago, when the yacht designer was responsible for the whole of the design, hull, external style, interior, systems, etc. so I see my/our style as simple but sophisticated yet detail-oriented style, and surely functional.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
Nature and civil architecture are important. Car design is also another source of inspiration.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.
Sustainability; efficiency; rationality; functionality; logicality
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Listen to the customer’s requests and then ask yourself why you have done it so far and whether you can go further.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
The refit of a classic schooner of 1928 because I had had the chance to follow every aspect of the project with the enthusiasm of the early years of work.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
It was the WHY 58, Wally Hermes Yacht. More than 12 years ago it was a design concept so ahead in terms of sustainability, new space, use of photovoltaic panels, energy recovery, etc. Unfortunately, that project has not been transformed into a yacht, but nowadays I see a lot of those ideas becoming present.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
My technical design books, a sheet of paper and pencil, and a good collaborator who works with me to develop a simple but useful volumetric 3D from sketches to represent the ideas that flow quickly in my mind.
What projects are you currently working on?
A passenger catamaran with electric or fuel cell propulsion and a new explorer series of 27 and 35 metres.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To consolidate the current jobs and to be involved in a new one, not necessarily huge, but let’s say below 500 GT, to give enough breath to the staff who works with me in the office.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:
Your most treasured possession? A wooden box with the whole series of the Copenhagen curves and a Vespa Primavera that I have from when I was 16 years old.
Your favourite holiday destination? The mountains when there is a lot of snow
Your favourite hotel? The Pensione Bencistà in Fiesole – Florence
Your favourite book, film & song? Book: “Il visconte dimezzato” Italo Calvino; Film: Ladri di biciclette; Song “e ti vengo a cercare” Franco Battiato
Your favourite food and drink? If done well, with the right products, a simple good tomato pasta. Wine, white or red, possibly Italian.
Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? Sailing on a dinghy on the Lake Maggiore in Lombardia.
If you weren’t a designer, what would you be? A veterinarian or a doctor.
