Tell us a little about the F/LIST design team’s background:

Overall, we have a F/LAB team of over 40 highly skilled specialists cumulating roughly 400 years of experience. Our multidisciplinary team’s broad skill set is our differentiator in the industry. We have experts in various systems such as electrical, electronics, pneumatic and mechanical, but also in upholstery, chemistry, finish materials, certification, jewelry, woodworking, cabinetmaking, etc. We additionally have a dedicated team focusing on sustainability, which is as knowledgeable as they are passionate about the topic.

How would you describe your team’s approach to design?

F/LIST defines mid to long-term customer-centric vision and/or opportunity which guides us in our innovative process. We then break down the vision into more tangible elements for the team to solve each technical challenge.

The F/LAB team produces small-scale prototypes to trial and test the new solutions. We use an iterative process to refine the ideas and help us assess specific solutions. We can move projects forward extremely fast, while simultaneously allowing us to kill unsuitable solutions early and cheaply.

Our on-site testing facility ensures that our new ideas will also exceed the demanding requirements of our customers, whether they operate on land, at sea or in the air. Having all the necessary skills, equipment, and infrastructure under one roof is key to the efficiency of our approach.

Where does your team’s design inspiration come from?

The foundation for the team’s inspiration is deeply rooted in our corporate culture of craftmanship, innovative spirit and customer satisfaction. Technology, nature, and sustainability are also part of their creative sources.

Additionally, each team member adds their individual flavor to the design team, drawn from their own experiences and skillset, with the goal to disrupt the industry and bring new solutions to the market which enhance the customer’s journey on land, at sea and in the air.

In what direction do you feel that aircraft interior design is moving towards in a general sense?

I believe we will see a lot more multifunctional environments in the future of cabin interior design. New technology and material developments enable customer-centric designs which enhance functionality, comfort, and convenience. Seamless transition of technology in interior components will also become a design driver. In terms of sustainability, I hope sustainability will be considered in the future of aircraft interior designs in a pragmatic and useful manner. Demonstrating that sustainable surfaces can be superior to those made from traditional materials can be key to the general appeal and accessible customization of a design.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

Customer experience: Enhancing the customer overall comfort, convenience, and functionality, allowing him/her to accomplish more during the flight.

Sustainability: Sustainability components with bio-inspired materials and natural components have the greatest customization potential. The introduction of sustainable material should positively contribute to the overall customer experience with visual storytelling.

Technology integration: The digital world continues to be increasingly integrated into the customers’ daily lives. Thankfully, technology is also progressing towards facilitating its integration into aircraft interior components more seamlessly than before.

Fleet adaptability: I believe in tremendous growth for fleet operators with the next generation of business travelers. Offering solutions tailored to those customers and operators are essential for the future.

Digital space: Digital art and exclusive artistic collections are extremely interesting, partly due to their dynamic nature. As we trend towards a more integrated digital life and better technology integration in the cabin, digital art will likely become an integral part of interior design.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Where suitable, complement the space using bio-based materials to create a connection to nature and a calming environment. Also, creating a visual storyline using materials, colors, and finishes creates a personal connection to the interior.

What was your favorite project to work on and why?

The F/LIST SHAPESHIFTER was a great project. Not only the creative part was terrific, but more importantly, we discovered the incredible power of the F/LIST team. Each unique skill set came together to create morphing elements we did not think were possible.

What projects are you currently working on?

A new generation of interior components and disruptive ecosystem solutions for the ultra-high-end luxury market on land, at sea and in the air.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

The entire F/LIST team is looking forward to seeing our first innovative component fly in 2023. We will also continue to push the boundaries of morphing components even further.
