Bergman Design House
Bergman Design House were the winners of the Refit Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.
Bergman Design House has completed a record-breaking superyacht refit project called Galaxy. The project took just five months to complete, rather than the typical 18 months. The exterior of the yacht has been refurbished with a hull repaint, new artistic lines, blacked-out windows, a new branded nameplate, full RGBW lighting strips, and underwater lighting. The interior has been designed with cosmic inspiration to create a spaceship-like atmosphere that doubles as a comfortable home. The yacht now features a private nightclub, a multi-sensory saloon, a meditation and wellness space, a cinema room, a private music studio, a touch-and-go helipad, and a private party deck. It is the first superyacht in the world to have a private members’ club that turns into a multi-sensory space and cinema lounge.
The owners desired a floating entertainment spaceship with cosmic-inspired accents, personal touches, and eye-catching details. The goal was to create a multifunctional platform for entertainment, celebration, and permanent residence. Bergman Design House created a fully sustainable interior design for all the main guest areas and cabins, as well as the deck spaces, while also restyling the exterior with a fresh and youthful new look and feel.
Collaborations were key to the design on Galaxy. The design team surprised everyone by collaborating with Disney’s art director of the Academy Award-winning film Avatar, Dylan Cole. He created “The Heart” of the refit, which is the yacht’s main saloon conceptualized as a private members’ club. The wallpaper resembles a futuristic forest, while the DJ booth can be set up against a backdrop of backlit agate. The saloon is a cool and multi-sensory space with discreetly integrated speakers and mirrored panels overhead, making it ideal for yoga and meditation workshops during the day and a cinema room at night. Joseph Klibansky, a sculptural artist from the Netherlands, collaborated on one-off art pieces, including “The Thinker” astronaut in the main saloon and the “Party Turtles” made from solid bronze in the upper deck lounge.
The sky-lounge on the upper deck was designed to be a lighter, brighter space where the owner and their friends can relax and spend time together. The lounge features a chandelier made up of quartz crystals, and the adjoining dining area boasts an integrated Lazy Susan for sharing meals. The upper saloon features artwork by Hannah Camille, a space for relaxing away from the party with a piano, a movie area, and dining around a magnificent table designed with straw-marquetry.
Galaxy offers accommodation for 12 guests in six cabins, each named after a planet in our solar system and themed after each planet with different textures of materials and colour themes. Guests will be allocated suites based on their preferences, and each one offers a different sense of place.
The project faced several challenges, including restrictions due to the pandemic and Brexit, as well as the practicality and functionality of storage and materials that had to withstand all the elements used throughout the yacht. The refit was completed on time, with the highest quality craftsmanship and finishes ever seen on a yacht, exceeding the owners’ wildest dreams. Galaxy is a luxurious and unique superyacht that transforms anyone who steps on board to another universe.
