Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design
Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design have been shortlisted for the Concept Under 40 Metres Award in The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.
Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design has created a new sailing yacht concept that can handle any climate on the planet where there is water, from the Mediterranean Sea to Alaska. The client’s request for a yacht that reflects the rough and harsh environment while remaining elegant and timeless was kept in mind throughout the design process. Additionally, the interior is designed to be warm, cozy, and offer a sense of protection in challenging conditions.
The yacht’s versatility is apparent in its ability to serve as a “base camp” for other expeditions, such as mountaineering or ski touring. The forward cabin can be converted from an office space into a guest cabin, while another cabin can be transformed into a storage area. The yacht’s weight and volume distribution were analyzed in detail to determine areas where weight savings could be achieved in the hull, deck, and structures.
Several hull shapes were studied to optimize the yacht’s righting moment and seaworthiness, while a lifting keel was installed to allow the yacht to navigate in shallow areas. The deck layout and ergonomics were designed for a small crew and to protect the crew in harsh and cold conditions. The yacht will be equipped with a fully hybrid propulsion system to reduce emissions and enable operation in environmentally protected areas.
To ensure that the yacht can withstand temperatures below zero, Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design carefully selected each component, and even the sailmaker conducted climate tests for the sailcloth. The design brief also called for a 4m dinghy that can be launched and stored by one person easily, and the team developed a special dinghy launching system that allows the RIB to be launched and stored in the lazarette by a single person.
The deck layout was optimized for sailing maneuvers and long passages, keeping in mind that the yacht will be operated with a small crew. The yacht features a rigid “dodger” and a navigation area near the companionway to protect the watch captain and crew in rough and cold conditions. All sailing maneuvers, such as reefing, can be performed from the protected cockpit area.
The interior layout and details were designed to be safe and comfortable in high winds and heavy seas. Handrails are located throughout the yacht, and all beds are adjustable for different heel angles. The galley can even be used in 40-knot winds.
The new sailing yacht concept from Harry Miesbauer Yacht Design meets the client’s demands for a yacht that can navigate any climate and serve as a base camp for various expeditions. The yacht’s design is not only functional but also elegant and timeless, with a focus on protecting the crew in challenging conditions.
