Profile: The Gulfstream Industrial Design Research and Development Team

As told by Tim O’Hara, Director, Design Innovation, Gulfstream
April 2022

Tell us a little about the Gulfstream industrial design team’s background (number of team members, cumulative experience, etc.)

The Gulfstream industrial design (ID) research and development team combines a talented mixture of skill sets to begin the initial process of envisioning new concepts for Gulfstream interiors. The ID team consists of 10 designers with more than 200 years of cumulative design expertise. This includes aviation experience as well as design expertise in yachts, automotive, furniture and electronics. Gulfstream industrial designers are supported by talented mechanical, software and hardware engineers, bringing its total number to more than 70 talented individuals strong.

How would you describe your team’s approach to design?

The Gulfstream ID team has made great strides in shifting its design strategy from concept to concept plus feasibility of design through a concerted approach to creating prototypes and mockups very early on in the process. This gives Gulfstream the opportunity to bring engineering and manufacturing considerations into play well before the products are introduced into production. This leads to an enhanced customer experience of mature, reliable interiors, as evidenced by the Gulfstream G700 and its International Yacht & Aviation Award-winning seats.

Where does your team’s design inspiration come from?

The ID team draws inspiration from Gulfstream’s customers and the team’s passion for exceeding expectations and making the Gulfstream experience truly one-of-a-kind. The journey itself is the inspiration, as the team aspires to a new level of design and comfort that will surprise and delight customers.

In what direction do you feel that aircraft interior design is moving towards in a general sense?

The ever-increasing demand to do more with Gulfstream aircraft drives the need to create even more flexibility into the designs by helping them become smarter and even more versatile. The cabin of the future will adapt even further once the individual boards the aircraft.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.

Next-level seating – building even further on Gulfstream’s award-winning, next-generation seat designs, the number-one touchpoint for customers on their aircraft

User-centric interiors – a more predictive user interface will enhance the customer experience

Designs that allow for customization – Gulfstream enables its customers to tailor their space to their individual styles, and the team strides to exceed their expectations for the highest-quality experience

Technology infused design – technology and design can work together to enhance the customer experience

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Think about a scheme that will complement your space and always stretch to exceed expectations. Tailor design schemes and how they flex to the customer journey.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

The all-new Gulfstream G400 airframe allows Gulfstream designers the freedom to design a beautiful space in a large-cabin business aircraft. This clean-sheet design showcases new ledges and beautiful seats and enhances the sleek, elegant cabin built for comfort. Gulfstream debuted the G400 full-size mockup late in 2021, and it gives the team immense pride to see the designs come to life.

What projects are you currently working on?

Currently, the team is working on the latest Gulfstream introductions, the G400, Gulfstream G700 and Gulfstream G800. Gulfstream strives to make the customer experience truly the best in the industry. This involves giving customers the flexibility to choose the best configuration for their missions, and the ID team helps ensure all those options are optimized to allow for a seamless customer experience from the ground to the skies.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Continuous improvement is at the center of everything we do at Gulfstream. Our focus is on building on our award-winning designs to deliver the customer experience of the future.
