Tell us a little about your background in design:
At a young age, I discovered the need to balance both creative art and technical problem solving. I had many Designer influencers present throughout my life including my mother, an artist who studied interior design, and my great Aunt, who was an Interior Decorator for many American Embassies abroad. I grew into the field rather intuitively and studied Design in Seattle, WA, USA, then obtained my NCIDQ certificate for practice. From there, I jumped straight into aviation, mostly due to my love of international cultures and technical problem solving. I have led Greenpoint Design for over 15 years and am proud of our beautiful portfolio of VIP aircraft interiors.

How would you describe your personal design style?
I would say I am a curious learner – I’m continually wanting to explore new arrangements and gain new influences. I believe 2020 taught me a lot about what change can look like, propelling me to consider where we should be headed with our interior projects. With that, I also anchor on the past, with an underlining Classic foundation.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I’m inspired by international influences, from artists to relics to natural elements. In the end, I always navigate back to Mother Nature and the diversity of design she brings.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I believe 2020 accelerated trends that were already building momentum. I still see the trend of “health is wealth” and believe we will see interiors begin to cater more to a healthier mind and body. I also hope to see substantial changes related to sustainability and biophilic design.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2020 and beyond.

  1. Wellbeing-Mindfulness – I believe health, safety and wellbeing will be an increasingly popular trend, and interior designs will cater toward a healthier mind and body.
  2. Intuitive Technology – Seamless connectivity and communication between the client their environment, whether it be there home, airplane, car or yacht. The interior should effortlessly interact with the client and serve as their digital concierge.
  3. Adaptability of Spaces (gather, socialize and work) – Interiors should be multi-functional, efficient and maximize potential for the available space.
  4. Connectedness with Nature – Visually bring the outside in by accentuating large windows and natural light, and incorporating plant life and other natural, sustainable design elements.
  5. Plan for the Future – 2020 taught us that change is the only constant. Our projects take months to years to complete, and therefore require forward thinking innovation and adaptability.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Develop many concepts and make them interchangeable. Your schemes should draw your client in to react and participate in orchestrating their interior. Understand your client and what is important to them.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
My favourite projects have been the most challenging ones – the world’s first B747-8 V-VIP and B787-8 V-VIP are definitely at the top of my list!

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Over the years, I have grown to love the complexities and challenges involved in designing VIP aircraft interiors.

How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
We’ve participated in the Awards over the past eight years, and I always look forward to drawing inspiration from the prestigious entries. I love how the Awards bring the industry together to celebrate growth, innovation and design!

What projects are you currently working on?
Greenpoint Design is currently working on the first B787-9 V-VIP interior, and developing interior design schemes for future VIP aircraft projects.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
I aim to continue to push the envelope in regard to technology innovation and efficiently incorporating this technology into our aircraft – ultimately to facilitate ease of use for our clients.
