Tell us a little about your background in design:
I studied design at Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. This foundation provided me with design knowledge, principles and user-driven thinking. I began working at Textron Aviation in 2015 as an Interior Designer for private jet and turboprop aircraft. During my time at the company, I have held roles that apply interior design to new product development, production of aircraft and refurbishment work. In 2019, I graduated with a Master in Innovation Design from Wichita State University. This experience provided me with a design-thinking mentality, prototyping exposure and diverse group collaboration to solve complex problems.
How would you describe your personal design style?
Eclectic. I can see beauty in many design styles and enjoy exploring multiple scenarios for a project. In my personal spaces, meshing vintage and modern elements while incorporating color creates a room that I enjoy.
Where does your design inspiration come from?
I am influenced by noteworthy architecture, fashion, and luxury spaces from other industries. I enjoy channeling subtle influences from those sectors into aviation design. It could be a form, pattern, or color balance that sparks a design.
In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Simplicity on the surface. Keeping the user interface of a product or space minimalist and easy to use while the backend is filled with technology and complexity.
Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.
1. Multi-functionality
2. Sustainability
3. Low Maintenance
4. Customer Driven Solutions
5. Interdepartmental Collaboration
If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Keep it classic with a twist. Spice up a timeless design with a personal touch of color, pattern, or unique material placement.
What was your favourite project to work on and why?
My favorite project during the Cessna Citation XLS Gen2 design was brainstorming a custom oak and walnut veneer inlaid tabletop to compliment the eco-focused interior.
What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Our new seat design posed challenges to perfecting the upholstery. We held several review sessions to markup seam alignments, adjust patterns, and troubleshoot seat quilting. We prioritized comfort and repeatability at every evaluation.
Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Interior visualization and imagery are crucial to making informed decisions before committing substantial time and money to a design.
How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
The IYAA awards are a unique opportunity to highlight luxury design in the transportation sector. Being the only design-focused award for the industry makes them a must-see competition and a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded peers.
What projects are you currently working on?
I currently support our Cessna Citation XLS Gen2 production aircraft, so I collaborate with those customers and assist them in designing their personalized interiors. I am also part of our new product development team that meets with customer advisory boards to gather feedback for projects in development.
What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
My first child will be arriving in 2023, so my personal goals are to grow into that new role and establish special family traditions and find my parenting style. My professional goals are to expand my managerial skillset on how to better support my team and to learn more about the private aviation competition.
Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:
I am constantly inspired by Textron Aviation’s fascinating customer base. The stories of our customers’ companies, interests, and their hard work paying off keep me energized and engaged. When a customer is thrilled at the end of their spec session and then again at the unveiling of their new aircraft, it is extremely rewarding to have them so excited about their personal touches being implemented.
