The restoration of the Old Quinta, a traditional Algarvian farmhouse, has been carefully executed to preserve its historic character while integrating contemporary elements. Located within an environmentally protected area, the property consists of multiple buildings arranged like a hamlet. The project, undertaken by JSH Algarve Arquitectura Lda, involved transforming the existing structures into a four-bedroom suite villa, complete with living and dining areas, a kitchen, a small basement, a swimming pool, and expansive outdoor spaces.

The renovation respects stringent governmental regulations, utilizing regional materials in a modern manner while maintaining the farmhouse’s original identity. Traditional Algarvian features have been preserved, with the various buildings connected by glass cubes, allowing the original façade to remain visible. A new kitchen extension, constructed with exposed concrete and large sliding glass panels, harmonizes with the historic architecture. Five strategically placed concrete walls frame the property, ensuring privacy while offering framed views of the extensive three-hectare garden.

The landscape design incorporates typical Southern European dry garden vegetation, complementing the natural surroundings. Interior materials include terracotta, wood, and glazed tiles, enhancing the villa’s warm and authentic ambiance. Sustainability is a key feature of the project, with solar panels and heat pumps supplying energy, and a natural sewage treatment system filtering wastewater before returning it to the ground.

The fusion of historic simplicity with modern concrete and glass ensures the villa integrates seamlessly into its environment without overwhelming it. The former farm buildings have been repurposed, with the cow shed now serving as the living and dining space, and the pigsty converted into the master suite. The completed project respects both the land and its history while offering a refined contemporary retreat.
