Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

I have a business degree in management and marketing and a second degree in Architecture and Interior Design from Academy of Art in San Francisco. I worked as a buyer for PRADA and as a media Account Supervisor for a national media buying service before founding Julie Rootes Interiors in 2012.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My personal style can be described as elevated and refined while balancing approachability and usability. Our firm merges custom designs and rugs with pieces unique to each home. We curate well-edited spaces that are cohesive and reflective of our clients’ lifestyles.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration comes from many places: traveling the world, exploring my local city of San Francisco, nature, fashion, architecture and art.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving in general?

I feel design is moving more towards a livable sensibility and away from formal spaces. We are entertaining, but perhaps in a less formal sense than in the past.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond:

practicality, unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, livability, sense of place, and multi-purpose.

If you could offer one piece of advice regarding design schemes, what would it be?

Invest in well-made furnishings that will last.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The International Design & Architect Awards are extremely important. They are recognizing talented designers all across the globe and are informing where design is going.

What projects are you currently working on?

We just finished a beautiful full-scope project on Kauai in Hawaii, a Julia Morgan-designed historical property in Pacific Heights in San Francisco, and are working on multiple high-end residential projects in San Francisco and the Peninsula.

What was your favourite project to work on, and why?

Our historical project in San Francisco was a favorite, for sure. It was quite an honor to work on a home that Julia Morgan designed and has been preserved in San Francisco for centuries.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

A half-constructed project that we inherited from a client who wanted us to bring it to life. It turned out beautifully but had so many construction challenges since it had turned over the original owner, architect, and contractor. Inheriting a half-constructed project definitely comes with challenges, but we pulled it off!

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

Performance grade fabrics, our local vendors and artisans and our project management system to keep everything running smoothly, on budget, and on time.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

My goals for the next twelve months are to continue to take on rewarding and fulfilling projects with clients who value our expertise and services, expand our team, and expand our roster of projects.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

My vintage ring from the Paris Flea Market.

Hawaii and Europe.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

Hemingway Bar, Le Meurice Hotel, L’Avenue restaurant.

Your favourite book, film & song?

Your favourite food and drink?

Margaritas and chips and guacamole

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

A curator of clothing, art, accessories – all in one gallery.

Anything else interesting?

I’m excited to be on the short list! I believe in living life each day to the fullest – life is too short not to enjoy it!
