Kate Nixon has completed Kinfolk, a generously proportioned family home in greater Sydney, reimagined to reflect and elevate her clients’ lifestyle with a focus on warmth, comfort and functionality. Completed in early 2025, the project responds to a brief that called for a home capable of hosting large family gatherings with ease while remaining calm and welcoming for everyday life.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
Kate Nixon approached the redesign by carefully considering flow and flexibility. A reimagined layout introduces three distinct yet interconnected living zones, enabling the home to accommodate up to 30 guests without sacrificing intimacy. These spaces support both togetherness and retreat, allowing the home to adapt intuitively to different moods and occasions. At its centre sits the kitchen, conceived by Kate Nixon as the true hub of the home. Generous in proportion and intelligently planned, it balances practicality and beauty with enduring, high quality finishes suited to entertaining.
The aesthetic direction blends classic comfort with refined practicality. Kate Nixon employed a soft, natural palette of warm neutrals, timber and aged brass, layered with tactile fabrics to bring cohesion and calm. Custom joinery provides discreet storage, while layered lighting enhances both ambiance and function. Furniture, lighting, rugs and window treatments were selected to create a harmonious interior that feels grounded and lived in.
Original features including high ceilings, timber floors and fireplaces were preserved and complemented by contemporary additions introduced with restraint. Large sash windows and French doors open to the garden, encouraging intuitive movement and blurring the boundary between inside and out.
Throughout the project, Kate Nixon integrated treasured existing pieces alongside new elements, curating art and furnishings in close collaboration with the clients. The result is a relaxed and deeply inviting home, perfectly attuned to family rhythms while offering an elegant backdrop for memorable entertaining.
