Shortlisted: Lobby Public Areas Global Award

The International Hotel & Property Awards 2025

The recent expansion and redesign of the El Cortez Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas holds significant importance for its owners, who sought to preserve the venue’s classical aesthetic. Given the historical significance of the original casino, which reflects the essence of early Las Vegas establishments, it was imperative that the new design did not deviate toward an overly modern approach. Kenneth Ussenko Design was entrusted with this project, ensuring that the expansion seamlessly integrated period-appropriate elements while elevating the overall experience.

Kenneth Ussenko, the lead designer, was granted creative freedom by the owners, particularly Kenny Epstein, who played a pivotal role in maintaining the property’s authenticity. Epstein emphasized that the newly expanded 10,000-square-foot area should feel cohesive with the existing casino rather than appear as a separate entity. As a result, the design was carefully curated to create a seamless transition, enhancing the guest experience while preserving the historical DNA of El Cortez.

The project, spanning fourteen months from the initial design phase to completion, involved extensive architectural planning and meticulous execution. El Cortez, a landmark hotel with a storied past, remains one of the few independently owned casinos in Las Vegas, unlike the corporate-owned establishments along the Strip. Originally owned by the infamous Bugsy Siegel, the casino has maintained its legacy through continued private ownership. Over the decades, it has been a gathering place for legendary figures, including Frank Sinatra, further solidifying its historical significance.

Following a successful soft opening, the grand reopening event features a red carpet ceremony attended by government officials and distinguished guests. Due to the project’s overwhelming success, Kenneth Ussenko Design has been retained for additional design enhancements, further enriching the timeless charm and storied character of El Cortez.
