Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc) :

I pursued my education at Texas A&M University, earning both my Bachelor’s in Environmental Design and my Master’s in Architecture. After graduation, I joined a Houston-based commercial architecture firm that focused on retail and educational projects. This opportunity not only allowed me to complete my apprenticeship for licensure but also provided me with invaluable experience in the field.

One day, I decided to take a leap of faith into the residential sector of design, and I’ve not looked back since. This journey that started over 13 years ago has become more than I could have dreamed of. As a female architect in a predominantly male industry, I have found my success to be incredibly empowering. Witnessing the growth of my business reminds me of where it all started. Growing up as an only child, I was influenced by my father who loved fishing, watching football, and tinkering in his workshop. These experiences fostered my creativity and laid the groundwork for my current path.

Now, at M Architecture, we specialize in crafting luxury custom homes that serve as functional works of art. We take great pride in our client relationships, ensuring that each home we design is truly tailored to the customer.

How would you describe your personal design style?
My personal style is clean and simplistic in form. However, I like to think outside the box, embracing uniqueness to create the unexpected. A comfortable contemporary design that allows functionality to be front and center while selectively incorporating vibrant colors and textures. When executed thoughtfully, architectural elements can possess their own artistic qualities.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere for me. I constantly observe my surroundings. Whether I’m at church, dining out, or visiting friends, I’m thinking about design. Travel is a passion of my husband and mine, allowing us to experience diverse cultures and styles, both locally and internationally.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Design is an ever-changing landscape, shaped by advancements in technology and shifts in lifestyle. Trends seem to adapt and grow in tandem with our cultural evolution.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
1. Lifestyle: Each client’s unique circumstances, including family, pets, and personal preferences, greatly influence design needs.
2. Environment/Location: Climate plays a pivotal role in architectural decisions. I enjoy creating spaces that seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor elements, celebrating the beauty of nature alongside built environments.
3. Technology: Keeping abreast of the latest technological innovations allows us to enhance architectural solutions for our clients.
4. Sustainability: Eco-friendly design practices are becoming increasingly vital, ensuring that our creations are both beautiful and responsible.
5. Wellness: Designing spaces that promote mental and physical well-being is essential, as the environment significantly impacts our overall health.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
Surround yourself with the right team. Collaborate with professionals who understand your vision and can support you throughout the design process. Trust and comfort in your working relationships are crucial.

Choosing a favorite project is a challenge; each one holds unique elements and special significance to me. The intricacies of each home make every experience memorable.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
One particularly challenging project involved designing a house in Houston with an underground wine cellar for a client’s exclusive collection. Basements are rare in Houston, so bringing that vision to life required extensive teamwork and collaboration, ultimately resulting in an incredible outcome.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies
Collaboration with specialized vendors is crucial, as their expertise in areas such as lighting, fireplaces, and windows/doors significantly enhances our designs. Building strong relationships with these professionals is extremely important as it benefits both me and my clients.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
I aim to continue designing extraordinary homes that exceed my clients’ expectations. Creating personal and cherished spaces that families will enjoy for generations is incredibly fulfilling.

Your most treasured possession?
My family is my most valued possession. Their unwavering support and the life lessons they’ve imparted have shaped who I am today. I am fortunate to have grown up in a nurturing environment and to have a husband who encourages me to thrive both personally and professionally.

Your favourite holiday destination?
Italy! The food, the culture, the people, and especially the architecture captivate me every time I visit. My experience studying architecture there during college deepened my appreciation for the country and it will forever have a place in my heart. I always look forward to the next chance to venture back.
