MERCÈ BORRELL Interior Designer has transformed this 1960s hotel with a concept centred around water and openness to the sea. The design places strong emphasis on expanding interior spaces and enhancing the connection to the surrounding views. Large openings have been created in the slabs, reminiscent of cenotes, while ceilings have been raised and shaped with flowing, sinuous curves that evoke water currents.

The reception area has been redesigned with a bold, highly functional desk that opens directly onto the parking area. A new canopy structure provides increased visibility of the interior from outside. In the bar area, an organically shaped counter integrates seamlessly with the architecture, forming a focal point for guests. This is enhanced by vertical elements such as the wine rack and elevator cladding.

Lighting plays a crucial role throughout the design, both natural and artificial. Custom-made lamps reflect the theme of water with bubble forms and fluid shapes, some inspired by marine life like jellyfish. Materials were carefully selected to evoke a sense of glamour and luxury, with rich textures, metal details, and considered lighting.

Circulation has been thoughtfully designed, ensuring balance between guest and staff movement. The hotel, as a tourist destination, benefits from a sense of surprise while remaining connected to its immediate surroundings. Open views to the sea promote a calm, relaxing environment in line with guest expectations.

Special collaborations with manufacturers were key to the project’s success, especially in creating the sculptural plasterboard ceilings with LED lighting and the distinctive metal features around the lifts.
