La Jollita

The project presents a Mexican seafood restaurant in La Jolla that blends 1970s West Coast nostalgia with contemporary coastal design and the culinary heritage of Sinaloa. Developed by interior design firm MM Estudio Interior, the concept was to introduce an authentic marisquería experience into the refined architectural context of Southern California while maintaining cultural integrity and operational efficiency.

Located within an existing commercial shell in a highly regulated coastal district, the project required full compliance with California Building Code, health regulations, and ADA accessibility standards. Environmental factors, including humidity and salt exposure, informed the selection of durable, low-maintenance materials suited to long-term hospitality use.

The design prioritises functionality as much as aesthetics. Spatial organisation supports high tourist traffic, efficient dining turnover, and clear separation between front-of-house and back-of-house operations. Visual transparency toward seafood preparation and bar areas reinforces freshness and strengthens the guest experience.

Conceptually, the space reinterprets the relaxed spirit of 1970s West Coast culture through a contemporary architectural lens, merging it with Mexican coastal traditions. Nostalgia is expressed through abstraction rather than theme, ensuring the environment remains sophisticated and contextually appropriate.

A defining feature is the graphic flooring system inspired by maritime signal flag alphabets, transforming the surface into a symbolic narrative element that anchors the interior and reinforces its coastal identity. Durable porcelain, marine-grade finishes, and custom millwork further enhance performance and longevity.

Ultimately, the project achieves a balanced synthesis of cultural translation, architectural clarity, and operational logic, creating a hospitality environment that feels authentic, efficient, and fully integrated within La Jolla’s coastal setting.
