Muskoka Lumber has completed Carrying Place, an 8,000 square foot residence on the shores of Lake Rosseau that blends clean Scandinavian lines with a social, stunning living space that makes everyone feel welcome. The project reflects Muskoka Lumber’s deep understanding of the region’s character, drawing on the nostalgia of Muskoka’s cool waters, granite outcrops, and pine forests while delivering a modern, functional home designed for gathering.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026
Carrying Place was conceived to embody the traditional Muskoka lifestyle, offering a space that feels like home for the family yet equally inviting for friends, neighbours, and guests. Muskoka Lumber approached the build with a strategic methodology to manage equipment movement, materials delivery and storage, and the coordination of tradespeople on a challenging sloped site beside the water. The result is a home that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Despite its generous size, Carrying Place is designed to appear modest from the exterior, presenting itself at roughly half its true scale. Once inside, the sense of space unfolds, but the residence never feels cavernous or impersonal. Muskoka Lumber curated small, restful auxiliary spaces throughout, gently guiding occupants into intimate areas that promote socialising without crowding. This balance of spaciousness and warmth is central to the home’s identity.
Every room is oriented to capture views of Lake Rosseau, respecting the contours of the land and ensuring the shoreline remains unbroken and serene. Muskoka Lumber positioned the house so that it meets the water gracefully, allowing boaters to glimpse the inviting property through the trees. These subtle sightlines reinforce the home’s character as a place where all who arrive feel welcome, reflecting Muskoka Lumber’s dedication to thoughtful design rooted in hospitality, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation of place.
