Pick-up Sticks Pendant Light Bespoke Commission

Shortlisted: Lighting Scheme Award

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2024

Nathan Kingsbury Design crafted three bespoke pendant lights for a double-fronted Victorian villa, transforming the entrance hall, playroom-home office, and front living room. The brief called for unique statement pieces visible from multiple angles, harmonising with the home’s existing design. Inspired by their previous work in the kitchen featuring the Alphabet of Light Linear pendant by Bjarke Ingels Group, the team created sculptural installations with slender, intertwined tubular brass, enhanced by a soft patina.

Drawing on the clients’ love for bold art and metal, the pendants blend linear precision with playful irregularity, producing unique characters in each room. These lights, not fixed, move subtly with the air, casting diffused light and creating dynamic shadows that change with the seasons.

Nathan Kingsbury Design’s approach ensured cohesion through linear details and rich materials. The brass patina, achieved through a water process, offers an ethereal quality, contrasting beautifully with vibrant colours in the home. The entrance hall’s staircase with linear glass spindles and a high gloss mint green handrail inspired the pendant design, while the playroom-home office features shelving and desks with playful brass details mirroring the lights.

From outside, the collection stands out with its unexpected shapes and floating lines of light, making them conversation starters. The engineering of the brass tubes and end caps was particularly noteworthy, reflecting the joy in the assembly and installation process. The result is a set of exquisite, impactful statement lights that enhance the home’s artistic and personal character.
