Nielsen House

Nielsen House has unveiled the remarkable transformation of a historic five-bedroom Lakeland villa on the shores of Windermere, delivering a project that masterfully balances period charm with contemporary luxury. Approached by an elegant couple seeking a 5-star retreat, Nielsen House was tasked with restoring and enhancing the property while maintaining its original character. The end result is a sophisticated second home designed for hosting discerning guests and accommodating the couple’s beloved cocker spaniels.

The villa now features a seamless blend of traditional and modern aesthetics, underscored by high-end finishes and innovative technology. The brief called for a home that married classic elegance with modern luxuries, including discreet tech integrations such as a high-tech sound, lighting, and management system. Thoughtfully designed window blinds ensure privacy and sun protection while complementing the villa’s refined interiors.

To enhance the property’s functionality, Nielsen House designed a contemporary kitchen, lounge, and dining extension, creating a more relaxed, practical living area that contrasts beautifully with the ornate period features of the original building. A striking Lakeland stone dividing wall bridges the old and new spaces, introducing visitors to the modern family living area, which overlooks a charming kitchen garden and greenhouse.

The transformation extends to a subterranean leisure space featuring a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym, and lake views. Accessed via a discreet underground corridor, this space is enhanced by a Lakeland stone wine cellar and playful vinyl murals, offering an unexpected element of surprise.

With expansive French doors, terraces, and strategic use of glass, the design maximises natural light and captures breathtaking views of Lake Windermere. Nielsen House has created a timeless retreat that celebrates its Lakeland heritage while embracing contemporary comfort and functionality.
