The International Design & Architecture Awards 2025
Central to the design was opening the living spaces to maximise natural light and showcase the stunning lakeside views from multiple angles. The property’s open-plan layout was refined to create a balance between openness and subtle divisions, offering privacy, sensory warmth, and intimacy without compromising the flow of the space. The result is a Lakeland home that exudes understated luxury, crafted with meticulous attention to detail.
A soft grey palette serves as a consistent canvas throughout, with textures and materials chosen to evoke a sense of calm and timeless elegance. From soft Caulfield Burlington stone flooring—used both indoors and outdoors—to large-format oak planks, every finish was thoughtfully curated. Layers of stone, timber, plaster, and fabric create a tactile and visually soothing interior, perfectly complemented by accent copper detailing that adds depth and richness to the design.
Despite the extensive use of glass to frame the lake and mountain vistas, Nielsen House ensured the home feels warm and inviting year-round. Acoustic softening and carefully selected materials create a sense of comfort, even in the region’s frequently grey climate.
The finished project captures the homeowner’s love for their property, blending a contemporary luxury aesthetic with the natural surroundings for a home that is as functional as it is breathtaking—a true Lakeland sanctuary.
