Tell us a little about your background in design:
John P. Margolis was born in Boston, Massachusetts into an academic family full of intellectual and artistic diversity. He received his bachelor’s degree with a Major in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, and his Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986.

His passion for classical and traditional architecture led him to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) in 1990. Since then, he has held numerous Board positions and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Southern California Chapter. He was recently elected to Fellow of the ICAA and has a certificate in classical architecture. John has also served as New England Chapter President of the ICAA for five consecutive years.

John is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is licensed in Massachusetts and California. John also serves on the Santa Barbara Board of the AIA, the Building & Grounds Committee of Lotusland and has served on the Regional Cabinet and National Council for his alma mater Washington University in St. Louis.

In 2019, John joined Appleton Partners as a Senior Project Manager in their Santa Barbara office where he pursues new opportunities for interpreting traditional approaches to the Southern California climate. John also enjoys sketching, watercolor painting and creating environments for timeless and harmonious living.

Drawing on the Appleton’s extensive experience in both traditional and contemporary work, as well as its commitment to thoughtful siting and a quiet, contextual approach, John’s projects benefit from the collective collaboration of the firm’s partners who value continuity, regional character, and the shared pursuit of enduring architecture.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
Traditionally derivative; classically inspired.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
Regional precedents/Historic precedents.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
Impersonal & non specific modernist design, aided by technology.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future. :
– Durability & Sustainability.
– Regionally specific design.
– Grounded in historical precedent with a twist.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?:
Listen to your clients and help them achieve a superlative home for living like none other.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards? :
Recognizing exemplary design talent around the world is essential for all designers to learn and excel.

What projects are you currently working on?:
Numerous renovations and new homes in Southern California.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
A large estate and vineyard in central California offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realize a project of this scale.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
See Above – The scale of complexity was a unique challenge for me and required collaboration withe skilled artisans on numerous levels.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?:
All fine craftsman and trained artisans.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
To work on projects that challenge my design abilities as an Architect and create enduring design for generations.

Your most treasured possession?:
My grandfather’s desk.

The Amalfi Coast.
