Tell us a little about your background in design:
John P. Margolis was born in Boston, Massachusetts into an academic family full of intellectual and artistic diversity. He received his bachelor’s degree with a Major in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, and his Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986.
His passion for classical and traditional architecture led him to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) in 1990. Since then, he has held numerous Board positions and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Southern California Chapter. He was recently elected to Fellow of the ICAA and has a certificate in classical architecture. John has also served as New England Chapter President of the ICAA for five consecutive years.
John is also a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is licensed in Massachusetts and California. John also serves on the Santa Barbara Board of the AIA, the Building & Grounds Committee of Lotusland and has served on the Regional Cabinet and National Council for his alma mater Washington University in St. Louis.
In 2019, John joined Appleton Partners as a Senior Project Manager in their Santa Barbara office where he pursues new opportunities for interpreting traditional approaches to the Southern California climate. John also enjoys sketching, watercolor painting and creating environments for timeless and harmonious living.
Drawing on the Appleton’s extensive experience in both traditional and contemporary work, as well as its commitment to thoughtful siting and a quiet, contextual approach, John’s projects benefit from the collective collaboration of the firm’s partners who value continuity, regional character, and the shared pursuit of enduring architecture.
