Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Having completed my masters degree in Melbourne, I took an immediate hands-on position alongside architects and builders which gave a comprehensive understanding of both design and construction. Leveraging this expertise, I founded BQ Architects, where I integrated these insights to offer a truly immersed role in any project.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is contemporary, and it aims to challenge our traditional understanding of design. I strive to create spaces that not only meet current needs but also inspire and push us towards envisioning and achieving what can be, rather than just settling for what is.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration comes from a blend of sci-fi and nature. I find that merging, or taking inspiration from, the futuristic principles of sci-fi with the organic, timeless qualities of nature creates a unique and compelling coherence in architecture. This way of thinking encourages us to question and push boundaries. It fosters an innovative process where designs become both artistic and harmonious with the natural world.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

The direction we have been taking for some time now is one of sustainability, not only by minimizing environmental impact but also by producing built forms that stand the test of time and can evolve with nature rather than combat against it.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2024 and beyond.

1: Organic Materials. 2: Tech Integration. 3: Flexible Spaces. 4: Buildability. 5: Social Impact.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

The vitality of considering buildability.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The recognition and benchmarking that comes with the awards is pivotal to encouraging continued development and improvement in our industry.

What projects are you currently working on?

We are currently working on various designs for residential dwellings and multi-tenancy units. There are also projects which have commenced construction which we oversee at intervals. There are also currently a few commercial projects we are overseeing ranging from offices to night clubs which are awaiting authority approval.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

By far the most rewarding projects are single architectural homes for families. These homes have a lot of thought and love poured into them throughout the design process as we foster a long-standing relationship with our clients and watch as they ultimately settle and co-exist with our built design.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

My own home, being The Male & Female House. Dealing with such a contrasting brief between the two homes was a challenge. This was compounded by the sense of deep attachment any architect has when designing their own home.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

3D design and visualisation tools.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

To continue to expand BQ Architects reach as we grow and inspire all those around us.
