Tell us a little about your background in design:
My path into the world of design was somewhat unconventional. Originally rooted in the technical world as a licensed avionics technician and an EASA Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, my journey took a pivotal turn towards the outfitting of private jets when I was recruited by DaimlerChrysler Aviation to run their maintenance operation in Stuttgart, Germany. From there, this blend of technical knowledge and management insight propelled me into the realm of large cabin completions, where I’ve had the honour of collaborating with some of the most talented designers, completion centres, and artisans from around the globe. Together, we’ve turned ambitious client visions into breathtaking realities.

How would you describe your personal design style?
If I were to describe my design style, I’d say it’s not about imposing my personal taste but about bringing a client’s vision to life. I believe in creating spaces that reflect the unique identity and lifestyle of each client, ensuring their airborne environment is as comfortable and personalized as their home or office. My role, as I see it, is to facilitate this transformation, working closely with the designer to ensure design intent is transformed into a design where each element serves a purpose and enhances the overall experience, while ensuring functionality and reliability.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes from many sources. Primarily, it’s in the stories my clients share, the challenges they present, and the dreams they entrust me with. Beyond that, I’ll find inspiration in everyday life— from the beauty I see in the nature around me through to inspirational and ingenious technical solutions found in other industries. It’s a continuous journey of observation, learning, and application.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Design, to me, is increasingly about creating spaces that adapt to and reflect the individual’s needs. It’s about thinking beyond aesthetics to how spaces work—how they can transform to serve different purposes, evoke feelings of comfort and safety, and incorporate technology seamlessly. We’re moving towards a future where design is not just seen but experienced in multi-faceted, deeply personal ways.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2024 and beyond.
Primarily, sustainability is essential, as we strive for environmental stewardship in our creations. Innovation invites us to explore new possibilities, making every project a testament to forward-thinking. Personalization ensures that each design reflects the unique identity of its owner, making every space truly their own. Well-being is central, as designs aim to improve quality of life. Lastly, Technology is seamlessly integrated, enhancing functionality and user experience. These themes guide our approach, ensuring our work not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the future.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?
Begin with an open mind. The best designs often come from a place of collaboration and flexibility, where the client’s vision is paramount. It’s about finding that perfect balance between what’s desired and what’s possible, and sometimes, the most unexpected ideas lead to the most stunning results.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
Choosing a favourite project feels almost impossible; each one has its own set of challenges and triumphs. But if pressed, I’d say it’s the projects where the client truly lets us into their world, sharing their passions, hobbies, and dreams. These projects become more than just jobs—they’re personal journeys that we embark on together, and the satisfaction of bringing these visions to life is unmatched.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
The BBJ787 SkyBlue project was, without a doubt, one of my most challenging yet rewarding experiences. The challenge lay not just in the technical complexities of transforming the cabin design concept from PierreJean Vision for such an advanced aircraft but in meeting the high expectations set by the project’s visionary goals. It was a testament to what can be achieved when innovation, determination, and collaboration come together.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
The relationships we’ve built over the years with designers, artisans, and completion centres are irreplaceable. These partnerships have become the cornerstone of our success, allowing us, together, to push the limits of design and execution. On a more personal note, my iPad to sketch out ideas (although I would never consider myself an artist!) l remains my most trusted tool, allowing me to quickly capture and communicate ideas as they’re formed through discussion.

How important are The International Yacht & Aviation Awards?
The International Yacht & Aviation Awards represent the best aspects of peer recognition in our industry. They celebrate creativity and innovation but also foster a sense of community among the best in the field. Being acknowledged by one’s peers is incredibly gratifying and serves as a reminder of the impact our work has on the world of aviation and beyond.

What projects are you currently working on?
We’re currently working on several exciting private jet projects that, while I can’t share too much about, each presents unique challenges and opportunities. What I can say is that we’re continuing to push the envelope, creating bespoke experiences that reflect the individuality of our clients and set new standards in luxury aviation.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
Over the next year, my aim is to deepen our commitment to innovation and sustainability within the aviation design space. We’re exploring new materials, technologies, and methodologies that will allow us to create even more remarkable and environmentally responsible designs. It’s about setting a new benchmark for what’s considered possible in private aviation.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:
My daily inspirations come from the natural beauty of British Columbia, the joy of discovery in travel, and the simple pleasure of a well-crafted meal. Each day offers a new opportunity to learn, grow, and be inspired, and I approach every project with the same sense of wonder and possibility.

Your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession is always the love and support of my family – a constant source of strength and inspiration. On a more tangible note, my 1955 Austin-Healey 100 holds a special place in my life. It’s not just a car but a symbol of freedom and the joy of craftsmanship. Restoring and driving it offers a unique blend of nostalgia and exhilaration that’s hard to find elsewhere.  I wear a silly smile whenever I drive it!

Your favourite holiday destination? / Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
I prefer to avoid the beaten path and find hidden treasures.  Temagami, a special spot in Northern Ontario where I canoe each summer with my wife. It’s our sanctuary from the world—a place without phones, internet, or emails. Here, we recharge, surrounded by nature’s unmatched beauty, paddling through the wilderness and enjoying the quiet.

Your favourite food and drink?
Having the privilege to explore the world means I’ve tried many culinary delights and I’d find it hard to choose just one favourite. However, the joy of discovery is in the journey itself. A glass of fine red wine, shared over dinner and a great conversation, really captures the warmth of shared experiences and holds a special place in my heart.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
Living in British Columbia offers endless opportunities to connect with nature. An ideal afternoon for me involves being outdoors—whether it’s hiking, stand-up paddleboarding, mountain biking, or skiing. The beauty and tranquillity of nature provide a source of endless inspiration and rejuvenation. On rainy days, you’ll find me in my garage, hands-on with my latest classic car restoration project, a pastime that combines my love for design with the tactile satisfaction of bringing history back to life, while listening to the rock and roll of my youth…

If you weren’t in your current job, what would you be?
My childhood dream was always to fly. If I hadn’t found my calling in completion management, I imagine I would have pursued becoming a bush pilot, exploring the skies and experiencing the freedom that comes with viewing the world from above.
