Tell us a little about your background in design:
I grew up surrounded by art, antiques and vintage fairs. My father’s property business and passion for collecting objects rubbed off on me early and I spent countless weekends hunting through fairs with him. In my teens, I worked for antiques dealers assisting in buying and selling furniture and objet d’art. This early exposure gave me, by osmosis, an appreciation of the value of beautiful objects and an understanding of many styles, periods and influences in interior design and art.

After studying European Business Administration in London, I spent ten years working in asset management for global financial institutions. Whilst working in the city, I honed my creative skills in my own time by investing in and developing property in the UK, Germany and France, building up an extensive network of design, trade and workshop contacts in the process.

After leaving my career in finance, I trained at the Inchbald School of Design and in 2009, I turned my passion for renovation, decoration and furniture into a profession through founding my studio Claudia Dorsch Interiors , we are a BIID registered interiors practise.

I am fluent in German and French and have worked with clients across the UK, Europe and the United States on residential and commercial projects ranging from one off furniture commissions to designing and managing multi year new build projects. The combination of analytical, organisational and creative skills coupled with an innate energy and drive come to the fore when creating and managing complex projects as an interior design consultant for my clients.

How would you describe your personal design style?
At Claudia Interiors, our aim is to help clients translate their inspiration and dreams into aesthetically beautiful, practical and moreover deeply meaningful homes. We do not have a house style. Instead we have a design philosophy that is entirely focused on our clients’ requirements, we take the lead from the lifestyle, personalities and circumstances of each property owner and the opportunities and challenges of the architecture of their home.

This discovery process allows us to gain a deep understanding of how to enhance and improve each individual property. While every finished property looks very different , there is a coherent signature; when you visit our projects you will notice a brilliant use of space, a depth of nuances in the schemes we compose, distinct attention to intricate design details, the quality of the build execution and always something unique; one of a kind which is special to each design story.

Personally I love the use of colour and beautiful fabrics, natural materials of wood and stone, the mix of eclectic pieces from various periods and the use of art and special objects is important to me to feel comfortable in my homes in London, Germany, France and Switzerland.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Aesthetics play an important part in the process of my designs; for example I am passionate about vintage and antique furniture, the quality of workmanship in such pieces of furniture gives me joy, I will always try and find a re-purpose of something reclaimed and craft a harmonious balance within the overall scheme between new and old.

My aesthetic emerges from a careful process of analysing the interior spaces, environment and history of a property and its surroundings as well as the stories of its owners.

The starting point for a particular scheme might be a piece of art, a period of design, a colour, fabric or an architectural intervention to improve a layout. I am deeply involved in every detail of the design process, working in collaboration with my team, our artisans and the clients.

I invest lots of time for creative absorption of inspirations , those may be sourced from my background, my travels, museums, buildings, visits to galleries and fairs and my genuine love and appreciation of art and cultures. I am at ease working across different styles, influences and periods of design . The ultimate goal for me is that a home is comfortable, timeless, feels like a cohesive story that has naturally evolved as a reflection of its owners’ way of life.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I detect a revival of looking to the values of the past; sustainability in design is finally becoming widely required and appreciated. Designs, interiors and products must be not only beautiful but practical, durable and timeless and relevant to the humans using them, able to evolve with a life story and become treasures for the next generation.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
1. The use of technology in the home ; personally I think some products and systems have become too complicated, taking up unnecessary time and resources.
2. The longevity and durability of products, I prefer to buy less but lasting quality products.
3. The consumption of raw materials and production processes. The extent to which materials can be salvaged, recycled and innovated.
4. The lack of skilled trades and the need to offer and value apprenticeships so that we can continue to hire excellent craftmanship.
5. The extent and type of packaging used to ship and deliver materials and goods.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
For residential private clients which I work for predominantly, I always advise to invest into the improvements which affect the long term quality of the architecture and interior performance of the property.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
They are an inspiration to broaden horizons and learn from best practises globally. It is a wonderful event to be part of as a means for global recognition, an opportunity for networking, as a benchmark for excellence, and as a way to signal recognition and achievement to past and prospective clients.

What projects are you currently working on?
We are building a large family home in Cornwall, renovating three properties in London and designing plans for a small luxury mountain chalet hotel.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
My favourite projects are second homes where the designs can be more like the scene setting of movies, where schemes are fun filled and eclectic. Clients are more likely to experiment and push the dial on design choices.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Some years ago we worked on a beautiful new build for which we made stunning joinery designs and selected fabrics, furniture and lighting and once everything was proposed and agreed, the family dynamics unravelled and the clients entirely redefined the goals and parameters and we did not get to realise the full potential.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
My designs are very broad and intricate and I could come up with a very long list of indispensable products and services. The single most important ingredient which makes every one of our projects unique is the joinery companies we work with, they help us realise the immense potential and solutions which we design to optimise the spaces.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
We are looking at setting up subsidiaries to service clients in Europe and we plan to work on more ski chalets and beach side residences – while maintaining an excellent service to our city based clients.

Final Thoughts:
Your most treasured possession?
The memories of all our family holidays and our stack of family foto albums which my children love looking through.

Restaurant:Jin Kichi, London for the food
Bar: Sky Garden for the plants and the view

Your favourite book, film & song?

Your favourite food and drink?

If you weren’t in this sector, what would you alternative profession be?
Running a private catering business maybe…I love cooking and baking.

Anything else interesting?
I run my business as an extension of my life, my staff are like family members to me and clients often become friends in the long construction process, my passions and hobbies merge with my design ambitions, I suppose I struggle sometimes with a work life balance, but that is just how I am and its natural when your work is your passion.
