Tell us a little about your background in design:
I started my passion for interiors and the build interior during my previous career as a flight attendant – travelling the world and seeing beautiful places being drawn to the architecture old and new. Drawn specifically to the European buildings and natural stones that still lay in floors and buildings after so many years and generations. MY father was german and a chef and a very stylish man we always ate good food , my mother could turn her hand to anything. Creativity was definitely in my blood. I completed an advanced diploma in Interior Design before leaving the Airline in 2008 then started my business. I drew from my natural sense of good things and started working with friends and family then neighbours. It quickly became more than just designing spaces into creating designer homes and then being asked to look after everything for my clients and managing the completion. I worked alongside a detailed builder and then built a dedicated team of artisans that I could trust and we worked together for many years. I love nothing more than being on the Build site and immersed in the build itself watching it grow and managing the outcome. I’ve been in business now for 17 years working continuously on projects. Over the years the size of the projects has grown and now I seem to be working on larger high end homes in and around Sydney Harbor and proud to say I have a strong client following of return business and word of mouth. My aesthetic is natural materials and aged finishes mixed with rich tones and colour. I am very passionate about my work and each project is unique – I don’t replicate a style or look I find each home is as unique as the owners I worked from home for 13 years – then moving into my own studio 3 years ago – I found a space where I could have all my loves in materiality as a showcase where clients could come into a space that felt luxurious and like home whilst being able to touch and feel beautiful things. Its been a wonderful experience having my own studio and very proud to say all our design work is done in house.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
I am definitely passionate about not being mainstream or repetitive design. I have certain products that I find perform well and provide a beautiful addition to any home so I will use those over and over. My design is based on the presenting project. Each client is different and has different needs from one to the next so I find it impossible to replicate a style.
However, my design style and passion is strongly anchored in natural stone, aged finishes and custom joinery and bespoke fittings. Creating a new palette and a new space for each client and project is always exciting and allows me to customize the interior and be quite unique. I am deeply invested in being surrounded by beautiful things and a stylish interior always with natural stone elements and this is evident in all my projects. I don’t like to over design or overcomplicate and sometimes being a little restrained or pared back can be powerful to the feeling of a space. My passion is natural organic materials and aged finishes mixed with rich tones and colour. I am very passionate about my work and each project is unique – I don’t replicate a style or look I find each home is as unique as the owners I see a project for the first time I like to be present in the home for a while and really breathe in the feeling thats there, the natural light, the energy and the orientation of each room and then I can see the possibilities clearly. It’s something I have always done, it’s a feeling . I also don’t like to completely demolish or remove what could be repurposed. The deep connection some people have to their home and the experiences they have had is emotionally powerful and needs to be nurtured, harnessed and embraced. I design with a practical focus on function and spacial flow and with that in mind adding beauty and style, creating a timeless space of effortless luxury and enduring quality . I love to mix contemporary design with vintage pieces it brings a certain quality to the project. Having some white space is relevant in any home. I also am very focused on thoughtful design, curating spaces that have a strong emotive element.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
It really comes from harnessing my deep core passions and then looking beyond my own desires and style and listening to my clients needs. It may be a new material that has me excited or natural stone that is stunning and found. When I see and feel the space and listen to my clients it just comes to me how that space could be transformed. It is never the same. It’s always unique and different for every project. Nature and the organic palette provides so much inspiration natural stones are like art pieces every one is so different and one of a kind. I start with natural stone and that usually leads the palette I pull tones and colours from this stone and mix other materials in – Using only 3-4 main materials as the base. Nature has an endless palette, so does light and space.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
It’s definitely a focus shift to the repurposing of materials. Designing responsibly and looking at what you design and if it was aged or broken down could it be repurposed or parts of it reused instead of it all ending up in landfill. Suppliers are also focusing on responsible and sustainable methods of producing their products and we as designers are listening and embracing. Circular design is a thing. Reinventing a preloved piece into the new space is so rewarding.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.:
Enduring design – timeless design that isnt trend based it has no end point
Sustainable and living consciously looking at the energy efficiency of a home being environmentally aware
Circular design where products can be reinvented or repurposed rather than dumped
Environmentally conscious design
Pared back and minimal design -having white space
Thoughtful and curated design

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
Designing with materiality and tactility brings depth to a space – touch, feel, see everything.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?:
It is a large prestigious event attracting studios from all around the world. A cross section of designers and architects all coming together to show case their work and support each other. An event that everyone is very proud to be a part of .

What projects are you currently working on?
A large 3 level residence overlooking the Sea. This one I am also managing.
A collection of mixed aesthetics and projects large and small.
We have taken on some large planning projects for design, materials specification and documentation for the build. It’s a good year!

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
I have worked on some very beautiful and exciting projects and all of them have been amazing and interesting in their own way. A collection of large and small projects, they all had their own style, personality and challenges. At this stage of my career and experience I prefer to select projects that will encourage and advance myself and my studio team to grow.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
I would say the Limestone house project – due to its large scale across 3 levels and the expansiveness of the floorplans on each level. Considering the interior finishes ensuring it had enough depth and interest yet had to be durable. Working with the existing structure required thinking differently to bring an older solid concrete building into a modern contemporary home with seamless finishes and surfaces. The materials had to be durable and suitable for the seaside location.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
Engineered oak flooring – Woodcut flooring
Supply and installation of natural stone – Styled in Stone Sydney, Cavart DS
Lighting – Light co, Est lighting and La lounge || Hush round plaster step lights
Tiles and natural stone surfaces – Surface Gallery and Barefoot living
Custom joinery – 73 joinery, Scotts Kitchens, Debrich joinery
Stone masonry – Stonemade stone masonry
Lounges and furniture – Jardan, Camerich, Fanuli
Rugs – The Rug establishment, Hali rugs
Fireplaces – Stoke fireplaces
Cladding and veneers – Cabinetti panels, Elton group
Art – Amelia Axton, Montana moore

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
Continue to evolve as a studio and practice. Always improving our skills and elevating our design. Immersing in as much product knowledge and materials as well as supplier visits.
