Tell us a little about your background in design:
Joanna – Following a degree in Textile Design at Nottingham Trent, I entered and won the Texprint award and exhibited at Premier Vision in Paris. I then went onto work for the couture fashion house Catherine Walker in London where I designed embroidery for their collections and bespoke projects. After qualifying in Interior Design from KLC School of Design, I joined Taylor Howes (where I met Claire) and we then went onto form and head up the Interior Design Team at Leconfield Property Group for a decade before setting up Horwood.

Claire – I studied French at university and had a career in Marketing before following my creative leanings and re-training in Interior Design at KLC School of Design. Winning the Diploma Student of the Year Award is one of my proudest moments! I then went onto work at Taylor Howes working on private client and development projects in London and overseas. After joining Joanna at Leconfield, and co-running the Interior Design department for many years, we decided to set up Horwood.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
We create refined, yet relaxed, contemporary interiors that are at the same time timeless and enduring. We believe that a home is for living in, and as such our designs are luxurious but always practical and personal.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
We find inspiration absolutely everywhere! We both love natural colour palettes and textures inspired by the outdoors and coastal settings but can be equally influenced by a colourful art exhibition or the ultra-sophisticated interior of a bar or restaurant. Sometimes a beloved artwork or object can be the starting point for our interior schemes, allowing us to tap into the individual taste of the client.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
We are seeing a shift towards design that is more about creating soulful, well-crafted spaces that reflect the personality of our clients. In a world where so much is mass produced and off the shelf, people are increasingly showing an appreciation of craftsmanship and comfort in their homes, using materials that age gracefully. It’s about creating homes that are meant to be experienced and lived in, and the emotional ties that they create.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.:
Sustainability – creating spaces that carefully minimise the environmental impact by prioritising energy efficiency, waste reduction, and the use of non-toxic, nature-friendly paint and materials. Selecting high quality durable materials, that complement the style of any given project, and will last longer.

Practicality for all the family – incorporating useful accessible storage solutions for all ages, for example joinery that can encourage children to be independent by tidying away toys or being able to access their own clothes. Selecting suitable materials for upholstery and rugs for busy families.

Flexibility – designing multifunctional spaces that can evolve over time, for example a home office/guest bedroom which may transition to a nursery, kids den or media room depending on the family stage and lifestyle.

Timeless design – not being too wedded to trends and selecting materials and finishes that are honest and enduring. For example, selecting a bathroom marble that will still look good in 10 years’ time!

Including wellness spaces – whether it’s a dedicated yoga room, meditation space or spa suite, mental as well as physical wellness often feature prominently in client briefs.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?:
Take the time to really listen to clients and understand the brief and continually refer back to it throughout the project to make sure every decision genuinely reflects their needs and lifestyle. By staying connected to what matters most to clients, we’re able to pinpoint the challenges they face and create spaces that not only look beautiful but truly work for the way they live.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?:
Gaining recognition for all of the hard work, dedication and passion that goes into every project of ours is extremely rewarding. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the work of the craftsmen, collaborators and tradesmen who make our vision a reality! It is also wonderful to be acknowledged by our peers in the industry who share our passion for Interior Design.

What projects are you currently working on?:
A Victorian House in Ealing, a Grade II List Georgian House in Devon, a family home in Kent and a lateral modern apartment in London.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
Our Kensington town house project. Having worked with the clients on previous projects we knew the high standards they expected, and we enjoyed translating this into meticulous design details that we knew they would embrace. Working with prime residential specialist, Birchley, on the construction side allowed us to celebrate the heritage of the property in retaining the original architectural details and period features.

We had great fun working on the children’s bedrooms and playroom, and we really loved the brief to keep these spaces playful and child focused, alongside being practical. The best part was seeing the children excitedly showing off their new bedrooms and playroom after they had moved in!

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
Completing a Grade II Listed family home in Belgravia during Covid was particularly challenging, but we found with teamwork and relying on our trusted suppliers anything is possible!

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?:
A fantastic contracting team to bring to life all of our design details and specifications as well as bespoke furniture-makers, joiners and craftsmen who bring every element of the project together smoothly.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
To successfully complete all of the beautiful projects that we are currently working on, and to build upon the success that we have achieved in 2025.

Your most treasured possession?:
Joanna – My Sprocker Spaniel Inca, still a puppy
Claire – A pair of antique Art Nouveau statues
