Tell us a little about your background in design:
After studying at the Royal Art Academy in The Hague, Jeroen de Nijs began designing furniture independently in 2000. Over time, the business grew into designing complete interiors of residents and retail. The last few years mainly consists of assignments for designing total concepts for interiors and architecture.

As an interior architect Jeroen has a strong sense of space and atmosphere. “My vision is that the exterior of the building is always designed from the use and experience of the interior. The functions of the various rooms and the natural light ultimately determine how a building will look from the outside.” Jeroen de Nijs comes from a construction family, building was something he was taught at a young age. His experience in the construction world proves to be very useful in his career as a designer of buildings and interiors.

How would you describe your personal design style?
Personally, I prefer to talk about my handwriting rather than my design style.

Jeroen de Nijs starts every new project with no preconceived style because no location or client is the same. Every project deserves its own specific solution. By realizing a project together with his client, Jeroen de Nijs makes his personal preference subordinate in order to be able to realize a ’tailor made suit’ for the client. Surprising sightlines and a spatial feeling characterize his work. In combination with the clear language of form that he applies, something ’tough’ and timeless emerges in his work. But whether it’s about interior, furniture or architecture, Jeroen de Nijs essentially designs spaces… with a soul.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
My clients inspire me and of course also the building or place which I design for. And I love to travel all around the globe.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
Sharing is caring.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
* hedonistic collective housing
* recycling and upcycling
* reclaiming Earth
* AI
