Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

I am a self-taught interior designer and project manager with over 20 years of experience, specializing in creating exceptional homes for multinational professionals and entrepreneurs. Most of my clients are second-home owners in Mallorca, Spain, though I have also completed projects in the USA and the UK.

Having lived in Spain for over 40 years, I am fully bilingual in English and Spanish, which allows me to seamlessly manage international projects and collaborate with a diverse range of clients. Over the years, I have built a trusted network of skilled tradespeople and professionals—my “dream team”—who help bring my designs to life with the highest level of craftsmanship. My deep understanding of local resources, combined with a global perspective on design, enables me to create beautiful, functional spaces tailored to my clients’ lifestyles.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is all about warmth, personality, and the power of color and texture. I love to bring depth and vibrancy into a space because I find that so many people get stuck in the Pinterest-perfect world of beige minimalism. While simplicity has its place, I believe a home should feel like a hug the moment you walk through the door—inviting, comforting, and uniquely yours.

I make it a priority to include personal touches that truly reflect my clients, ensuring that no two projects ever look the same. Design should never be a copy-paste solution; it should tell a story—your story. By layering textures, introducing bold or unexpected colours, and incorporating meaningful details, I create spaces that feel lived-in, loved, and full of character.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

My design inspiration comes from nature and my travels—every place I visit leaves an imprint on my creative vision. I am especially drawn to the colours, textures, and organic forms found in the natural world. As a keen scuba diver, I find endless inspiration beneath the ocean’s surface—the fluidity of movement, the vibrant hues of marine life, and the intricate patterns of coral reefs all influence the way I approach design.

I love incorporating these natural elements into my work, whether through earthy materials, rich color palettes, or subtle nods to the ocean’s beauty. My goal is to create spaces that feel alive, connected, and deeply personal, blending the serenity of nature with the warmth of a well-loved home.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

It’s always difficult to choose a favourite project because each one becomes special to me in its own way. Every home I design tells a unique story, and I invest so much passion and energy into bringing that story to life. That said, the projects that truly stand out are the ones where the budget, timeframe, and creative freedom align perfectly. When I have the space to be intuitive, push boundaries, and fully explore my design vision, that’s when the magic happens. Those are the projects that feel the most rewarding—where everything flows seamlessly, and the end result is not just a beautiful space, but one that truly resonates with the people who live in it.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

One of my most challenging aspects of design work here in Mallorca is working with tight timeframes, particularly when we’re limited by local regulations on when building work can be carried out. The restrictions on construction, especially in the summer months or during holiday seasons, can create significant pressure.

These time constraints often mean that we have to be very strategic in planning the workflow, managing contractors, and ensuring that all materials are sourced on time. While it can be stressful, I’ve learned to navigate these challenges by staying organized, being flexible, and keeping close communication with both clients and the team. It’s always incredibly rewarding when we can meet these deadlines and still deliver the quality and creativity that the project deserves.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

One service I rely on heavily would be Communication Technology – Since I work with clients across the globe, staying connected is key. I rely on video conferencing platforms, project management software, and design collaboration tools like Pinterest, mood boards, and virtual design programs to keep everyone on the same page, especially with international clients. It helps me share progress, discuss details, and address any concerns in real-time.

I could not live without Local Craftsmen & Artisans – I always work with local artisans to bring that personal touch to my projects. Whether it’s custom-made furniture, hand-painted tiles, or unique decor pieces, their expertise adds authenticity and character to my designs.
Material & Textile Suppliers – Textures and materials are such an integral part of my designs, so I rely on high-quality suppliers for fabrics, flooring, and bespoke finishes. Whether it’s luxurious upholstery, natural stone, or custom wallpapers, having access to the right materials ensures the final look is both unique and durable.

As I was struggling to find the quality furniture and home accessories I needed here in Mallorca, I decided to take matters into my own hands and set up my own retail stores. This has been an incredibly rewarding experience, as it allows me to have direct access to the pieces that fit my design vision perfectly. Working closely with my retail team, we carefully curate a selection of furniture and finishing touches that align with the high standards I hold for my projects.
Having my own stores also means I can offer my clients exclusive pieces that are not only beautiful but also unique to the island. It’s a great way to ensure that every detail is just right, and it gives me the opportunity to introduce them to new and exciting designs that they may not find elsewhere. The process of selecting the perfect items for each project has become one of my favorite parts of the design journey, and it allows me to blend creativity with the hands-on approach that I enjoy.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Like my birth sign, Pisces, I feel that the design world is swimming in two different directions. On one side, we are moving rapidly towards smart homes, where technology enhances our living spaces and sustainability plays a crucial role in reducing our environmental impact. On the other side, I see a beautiful resurgence of quality craftsmanship—furnishings that are built to last, replacing the fast, disposable options of the past.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2024 and beyond.

1. Personalization & Storytelling – Moving away from mass-produced, one-size-fits-all interiors in favor of spaces that reflect individual personalities, lifestyles, and histories.
2. Cultural & Global Influences – Drawing inspiration from diverse traditions, travel experiences, and artisanal techniques to create unique, worldly interiors.
3. Biophilic Design & Connection to Nature – Integrating natural materials, organic shapes, and indoor-outdoor living to enhance well-being and harmony with the environment.
4. Smart Home Integration – Incorporating technology that enhances convenience, efficiency, and sustainability, from energy-saving systems to AI-driven home automation.
5. Bold Use of Color & Texture – Moving beyond minimalism to embrace rich, layered designs that evoke emotion and create a sense of warmth and individuality.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Design with intention. Every choice—from materials and color palettes to technology and craftsmanship—should have purpose and meaning. Balance innovation with timeless elements, and always consider sustainability, personal connection, and functionality. A well-designed space isn’t just beautiful; it tells a story, enhances well-being, and stands the test of time.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The International Design & Architecture awards bring recognition to quality craftsmanship and innovative design and validation of professionalism. For me, the true reward is creating spaces that deeply resonate with my clients—homes that feel personal, lived-in, and full of character. My work is about people, storytelling, and longevity, so to receive this award would bring a sense of pride in my craft.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Over the next 12 months, my aims and goals are focused on both personal and professional growth. First and foremost, I want to continue creating beautiful, personalized interiors for my clients, ensuring that each project reflects their unique style and needs. I will also keep sourcing quality products for my store, curating a selection of pieces that align with my vision and continue to provide exclusive, high-end options to clients here in Mallorca.

Additionally, I am excited to start work on a coffee table book of my own, showcasing my design philosophy, past projects, and the inspirations that drive my work. It’s something I’ve been passionate about for a while, and I’m looking forward to the creative challenge of bringing it to life. These goals will keep me busy, but they are all things that will bring me even closer to my ultimate mission of designing homes that are not only beautiful but full of character, warmth, and meaning.

Final thoughts; tell us a little more about yourself and your daily inspirations:

Your most treasured possession?

My most treasured possession is time—specifically, the time spent with family and friends. Those moments of connection and shared experiences are what truly matter to me. I also hold dear my home, which is filled with wonderful treasures I’ve collected from my extensive travels around the world. Each item holds a story, a memory, and a connection to the places and people I’ve encountered, making my home a constant source of inspiration and comfort. It’s these personal touches and the time I get to spend in the company of loved ones that are my greatest treasures.

Your favourite holiday destination?

My favourite holiday destination is somewhere where the culture and language are different, and the climate is hot. I thrive in places that offer a new experience, where I can immerse myself in unfamiliar surroundings and learn about local traditions. I’m at my happiest when I’m near the sea, whether it’s listening to the waves crash or diving into the depths. Scuba diving is one of my passions, and I love exploring the underwater world, discovering new marine life, and enjoying the peace it brings. Of course, the experience wouldn’t be complete without savouring new cuisines—trying fresh, local dishes is one of my favourite parts of traveling. For me, the perfect holiday combines adventure, relaxation, and the joy of discovering something new.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?

Hotel:
Two recent hotels stand out as my favourites for very different reasons, each offering a unique experience that speaks to my love for both luxury and natural beauty. QT Singapore- left a lasting impression. It’s a perfect blend of opulence and modern design, seamlessly integrating old-world charm with a bold, contemporary vision. Alphonse Island – in the Seychelles, which was a true slice of paradise. The remote location and stunning ocean views created an atmosphere of serene solitude, where I felt like the only person on the island. Both destinations offer a perfect blend of luxury, design, and nature, but in very different ways.
Restaurant: One of my favourite dining experiences was at a hidden gem in the Gijon region of Japan, though I’m afraid I didn’t catch the name of the restaurant. My husband and I stumbled upon it while exploring, and it turned out to be an unforgettable find. We were treated to the luxury of having three private chefs prepare exquisite dishes just for us.
Bar: My favourite bar in London is Gordon’s Wine Bar because it has such a timeless charm and a truly unique atmosphere.

Your favourite book, film & song?

Book: The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller
Film: Eat Pray Love
Song: Black Velvet sung by Alannah Myles

Your favourite food and drink?

Food: Anything with Truffle
Drink: Homemade Kombucha (I gave up alcohol in 2023)

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?

Scuba diving followed by a massage.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

If I weren’t in the design profession, I think I could be a counsellor because I have a natural curiosity about people and a strong desire to help others. I’ve always enjoyed listening to people’s stories, understanding their emotions, and offering a sense of support or clarity. Much like in design, where I try to create spaces that resonate with a person’s unique personality, as a counsellor, I believe I could help guide others through their challenges, listening carefully and providing a safe, empathetic space for them to express themselves. The skills I’ve developed in problem-solving and building connections in my design work would likely translate well into a counselling environment, where understanding and finding solutions is just as important.
