Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Born in Los Angeles and educated between Iran and France, I graduated as a DPLG architect in Paris before specialising in cultural and hospitality spaces. My early career included revitalising historic theatres and museums for the City of Tehran, then sixtine years years as Artistic Director at Jacques Garcia’s studio, where I oversaw landmark projects such as La Mamounia (Marrakech) , Oscar Hotel and Park Chinois (London) …. In 2018 I founded Laleh Amirassefi Design, delivering restaurants, hotels, casinos and private villas across Europe , Asia and the Middle East.

How would you describe your personal design style?

A poetic dialogue between Western modernity and Eastern heritage. I weave Persian calligraphy, bespoke lighting and sumptuous materials into contemporary narratives, favouring bold colour palettes, layered textures and a sense of theatrical storytelling that immerses guests in a border-less journey.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?

Stay radically curious: study history, but design for tomorrow.
Travel widely—stand before masterpieces old and new. Read voraciously beyond design, educate the mind, nourish the imagination, then let quiet introspection forge those sparks into spaces that move the soul.

How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards?

They provide a rare, peer-reviewed platform that transcends trends and geography, celebrating the craft behind hospitality design and giving independent studios like mine global visibility.

What projects are you currently working on?

Siena Restaurant, Dubai – a casually chic Italian venue at DIFC
• Kubaba Restaurant, Paris – contemporary Levantine dining near the place du Marché Saint Honorée Paris 75001
• Three confidential luxury apartments in Paris and London

Where does your design inspiration come from?

From Golden age Safavides ( 17th century) Persian architecture and visionary architects such as Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry; from literature and poetry—Rumi, Hafez, Apollinaire, Beaudelaire, Marguerite Yourcenar—and from the cultural dialogue I experienced while living in Los Angeles, Tehran, London and Paris. Flea-markets, museums and artisan workshops constantly rekindle my obsession with craft and history.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Toward experiential storytelling: spaces that deliver emotional resonance, seamless technology and sustainable luxury.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

1. Circular, low-impact materials
2. Cultural storytelling & hyper-locality
3. Invisible smart-tech integration
4. Biophilic design & wellbeing
5. Multi-sensory immersion (light, sound, scent)

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

Maison Revka, Paris – for the creative freedom to merge Louis XV opulence with Slavic folklore, and for the media buzz that followed.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Park Chinois, London , And Le Chinois club in Ibiza – balancing live-music acoustics with heritage-listed constraints and exacting fire-safety regulations.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies

Zona lighting • Pierre Frey, Lelièvre , Rubelli, Nobilis , Osborne & Little textiles • Primo Mobili Dubai bespoke furniture • Paris Passementrie trimmings • Daniele Decor cabanas

Anything else interesting?

This poem by Rumi beautifully captures the essence of my thoughts:

As long as you seek the gem in the sea,
You are the treasure you yearn to be,
As long as you hunger for a bit of bread,
You are that bread, by longing led.
Grasp this secret, subtle and true:
What you are seeking – is non but you
