Tell us a little about your background in design:

I’ve always had a passion for real estate and design for as long as I can remember.

When I was 12, I spent my summers helping my parents refurbish rental properties they purchased to support our extended family in Ethiopia. I didn’t realize it then, but those early experiences planted the seed for what would become a lifelong love for real estate development and interior design.

Even when I began my career in finance—working for respected institutions like the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Merrill Lynch—I remained captivated by the architecture around me. I was especially drawn to the character of New York City’s historic buildings, where ornate exteriors met modern, luxurious lobbies. That contrast between classic and contemporary continues to inspire my work.

Over 20 years later, and now as a mother of three, my design approach is intentional, personal, and ever-evolving. My style is distinctly modern, layered with subtle Art Deco influences—think bold details, rich textures, and refined geometry. I value flexibility and versatility, designing spaces that adapt to real life without compromising sophistication.

This passion led me to launch LIU Luxxe, a company focused on sourcing high-quality elements and materials that elevate interiors and create a sense of understated luxury. Through LIU Luxxe, I merge my love of development with my obsession for detail—ensuring every project feels both elevated and livable.

How would you describe your personal design style? :
My style leans modern with touches of Art Deco—clean lines, bold details, and a bit of drama in the right places. I love creating spaces that are both flexible and versatile, where design meets real-life functionality.

Where does your design inspiration come from? :

I find inspiration everywhere—from the brownstones of DC’s Georgetown to the antique doors lining the streets of Milan. Even the quiet curves and forgotten architectural details in old New York subway stations spark ideas. I’m especially drawn to the intersection of history, culture, and design, and I often incorporate influences from my Ethiopian heritage through color, texture, and materials. Travel, architecture, and nature constantly feed my creativity.

To me, luxury isn’t just visual—it’s emotional. It’s in the way a space moves, breathes, and invites you in. My goal is always to create spaces that are not only beautiful, but timeless, functional, and full of soul.

I also deeply admire the work of designers like Baptiste Bohu—his ability to blend boldness with refinement really resonates with me. His aesthetic directly inspired the swimming pool design for my Hamptons Edition project, where I selected a custom geometric mosaic made from Carrara, Nero Marquina, and emerald green marble. The pattern was bold yet intentional, designed to echo the deep greens of the surrounding golf course and create a seamless dialogue between the landscape and the space. It’s details like these—where design tells a story—that truly move me.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? :

I think design is moving toward a more intentional and flexible future—where functionality doesn’t come at the expense of beauty. More than ever, people want spaces that adapt to their lifestyle, yet still feel elevated and well-crafted. I see a growing emphasis on versatility: multi-use rooms, transitional layouts, and materials that are both durable and luxurious.

For me, the challenge—and the excitement—is creating spaces that feel tailored and timeless, while still allowing room for life to unfold naturally. Flexibility is definitely at the forefront, but thoughtful design elements and high-end finishes still matter. That balance—between livability and luxury—is where I think the future of design is headed.

By way of example, in the cinema room of the Hamptons Edition project, we created a space that feels like a true theater experience—complete with dense velvet curtains enveloping the walls and plush silk rugs inspired by the Chanel boutique on New York’s Fifth Avenue. But hidden behind those curtains are three-meter-tall windows. When opened, they flood the room with natural light and reveal the lush garden outside—instantly transforming the space into a bright and inviting kids’ playroom. It’s that kind of dual-purpose design—where atmosphere and function coexist—that defines where I believe the industry is going.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future. :

I firmly believe that functionality, intentionality, lifestyle adaptability, personal identity, and creating a space of cozy opulence- are the pillars of timeless home design. I avoid trend-following—and have little interest in starting trends myself. Instead, I am committed to bespoke design.

When designers come to LIU Luxxe seeking materials—whether for a bathroom mosaic or a kitchen fit-out—I encourage collaboration to produce something entirely unique. These custom creations honor both their aesthetic vision and the client’s individuality, ensuring every space feels thoughtful, refined, and deeply personal.

At LIU Luxxe, we partner with designers to craft environments where luxury is purposeful and every detail—from pattern to finish to palette—is selected with intention and character in mind.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
If I could offer anyone a piece of advice when designing their home, it would be this: design your space your way, with authenticity at the heart of every choice. Create a home that genuinely reflects how you and your family live and move through the space—where comfort, function, and personal style come together naturally.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

I believe the International Design and Architecture Awards are important because they provide a powerful platform for creatives from around the world to come together and share their unique perspectives and styles in a cohesive, inspiring space. It’s more than just a celebration of design—it’s a meeting point for individuals from diverse backgrounds, not all necessarily rooted in design, to contribute their own sense of originality and vision toward a shared goal: creating meaningful, beautifully designed spaces.

As someone from a finance background, of Ethiopian origin, American-born and raised, and now living in Dubai, I bring my own personal blend of influences and intentional style to every space I design. It’s this diversity of experience that allows each project to tell a story that feels layered, thoughtful, and globally inspired.

What projects are you currently working on? :

I’m currently working on several projects, including a particularly special one in the U.S.—a boutique development of eight brownstones in the suburbs of New York City. Set to be the first of its kind in the area, this project is designed to capture the essence of its suburban surroundings while thoughtfully pulling in the timeless character and architectural charm of New York City’s iconic brownstones. I’m currently fine-tuning the designs to ensure every detail strikes a balance between local authenticity and classic urban elegance.

Another special project I’m working on is in its early stages—an exciting opportunity to introduce a refined European modern design aesthetic to a villa in Dubai. This concept will be thoughtfully integrated across both the exterior and interior elements, creating a cohesive and contemporary living experience. The intention behind this design direction is to appeal to the growing number of European transplants relocating to Dubai, offering them a sense of familiarity and style that resonates with their design sensibilities while complementing the local context.

What was your favourite project to work on and why? :

One of my all-time favorite projects was a boutique, eight-unit luxury apartment building named after my firstborn, located within the suburbs of NYC, The Mignote on Second. It holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. Not only was it developed in the town where I grew up and graduated from university, but it also came to symbolize integrity, character, and resilience.

From a design perspective, it was an incredibly liberating experience. I had the creative freedom to thoughtfully explore and express design in every corner of the building, with quiet luxury serving as the guiding principle throughout.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
I believe every project brings its own set of challenges—but the key isn’t to dwell on them, it’s to recognize them early and move quickly toward effective solutions. In fact, I’ve often found that the obstacles faced in one project become the inspiration or foundation for something even better in the next. Challenges, when approached with the right mindset, often spark fresh creativity and stronger outcomes.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
My go-to finishing materials—hands down—are from LIU Luxxe. Of course, I’m a bit biased, since it’s my own company—but I have control over customizing every piece and making it truly bespoke to each project. That said, I love incorporating details from anywhere and everywhere, depending on the vision I have for each particular project. It’s all about what brings the space to life.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? :
My ideal project over the next 12 months would be a hospitality venture by the end of 2026. I’d love the opportunity to design something boutique and thoughtfully curated in a stunning location like Marrakech—or take on the challenge of revamping an existing, operating hotel within one of the Emirates. What excites me most is the chance to infuse these spaces with my personal design touches and carefully selected material elements, creating environments that are both elevated and deeply connected to their setting.

Your most treasured possession? :
My family. Period.

Your favourite holiday destination? :
My favorite holiday destination, without a doubt, is Madrid. The city’s architecture and design are captivating—a seamless fusion of old-world charm and modern elegance. But what truly makes it special is the energy of the people. Young or old, everyone seems effortlessly stylish, genuinely happy, and fully immersed in the joy of living—no matter the time of day or day of the week. It’s a place that pulses with life and inspiration.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar? :
Hotel: My favorite hotel is Al Nassem Hotel in Dubai. It’s luxurious, timeless style exudes quiet luxury in every corner. It ignites every sense including the sense of smell once you enter through its glass doors.

Your favourite book, film & song? :

Book: My favorite book is The Obstacle is the Way, gifted to me by my father.

Film: My all-time favorite movie is Serendipity—I’m an absolute sucker for a good romantic film. I think it also resonates so deeply with me because it reflects a belief I hold at my core: everything happens for a reason, and it all unfolds exactly when it’s meant to.

Song: My favorite song is Katy Perry’s Roar—a bold, unapologetic anthem that fuels my fire when the day gets tough. Whenever I’m faced with a challenge, it reminds me of my strength, helps me reset, and pushes me to rise with confidence and power.

Your favourite food and drink?

Food:Anythng Ethiopian – My ultimate comfort food

Drink: a glass of Malbec

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon? :
My favorite way to spend an afternoon is completely relaxed with my family—everyone curled up on the couch, lounging together, and watching a movie. Especially with my oldest heading off to college this fall and my second following suit next year, these moments feel more precious than ever. It’s the simple, quiet times together that I truly cherish.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would you alternative profession be? :
Honestly, I couldn’t imagine myself in any other field. The deeper I go, the more I fall in love with it—and the more I find meaningful ways to continually intertwine my life with the worlds of real estate and design. It’s become more than a profession; it’s a passion that keeps evolving alongside me.
