Tell us a little about your background in design:
Growing up in Muskoka, we are exposed to construction at a young age, as the area has long been a destination for people looking to develop vacation homes on one of our many lakes. After leaving high school, I worked with a local construction company, where I was exposed to a range of high-end projects and gained an appreciation for the level of thought and coordination required to execute them successfully. This experience led me to pursue the Architectural Technology program at Georgian College, which provided a strong technical foundation.

When I joined Muskoka Lumber in 2014, I became involved in many projects that required collaboration with design leads and other local designers to produce construction documentation. After approximately two years of working on other designers’ projects and gaining insight into their creative processes, I began taking on design-lead roles and adding my own creative perspective to projects coming through our office. Today, I serve as the lead creative voice within our design office, overseeing the leadership and growth of the Architectural Design division at Muskoka Lumber.

How would you describe your personal design style?:
I enjoy incorporating a variety of textures and details into my designs, with the goal of creating buildings that feel timeless. I focus on crafting special moments, whether it’s a striking lake view upon entering the main entrance or a thoughtfully placed window at the end of a long hallway. These elements encourage exploration and create a meaningful experience as you move through a space.

Where does your design inspiration come from?:
My primary source of inspiration comes from walking the build site and immersing myself in its surroundings, the views, natural rock outcroppings, and the forested landscape. From there, I consider how each space can be made special for the client: how sunlight will enter the building, how privacy can be achieved from neighbours or common areas, and how the home can respond naturally to its setting. These details come together to form a cohesive and compelling architectural experience.

Our clients typically approach us with a desired architectural style, whether inspired by one of our previous projects or something that has caught their attention elsewhere. This often requires research through books or online sources to gather the necessary references and ensure the design is executed seamlessly.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?:
We are seeing a shift away from highly contemporary builds and a return to the traditional architectural roots that have been present in Muskoka since the early 1900s. The challenge lies in finding ways to introduce a modern sensibility while still respecting and honouring those traditional forms.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future. :
1. Consider the property the client brings to you and identify what can remain untouched.

2. Aim to capture the longest and most meaningful views possible. This may require an unconventional site orientation, but the results are often worth it.

3. Understand the path of the sun and how interior spaces can best capture natural light throughout the day.

4. Find ways to draw occupants out of the home and encourage them to experience the natural environment their property offers.

5. Pay close attention to how details will come together on site, and collaborate closely with the builder to ensure the design vision is executed successfully.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?:
Listen carefully to the client and identify the problems they are trying to solve. Sometimes even an offhand comment is something we need to consider, to achieve a result that exceeds their expectations.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?:
These awards provide an opportunity to showcase our creativity to a global audience. It’s easy to become focused solely on local markets, but there is a worldwide audience interested in what we do and in what makes Muskoka such a unique place to design and build.

What projects are you currently working on?:
I am currently working on a particularly special project due to its close proximity to the water’s edge. We are replacing a contemporary cottage built in the 1960s, one that has become a recognizable landmark for those navigating the lake, with a modern interpretation that we hope will honour the spirit of the original design.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?:
My favourite project was a small vacation home constrained by a strict building envelope established by a previous owner. Working with the new owners, we designed a 250 m² cottage that could comfortably host guests on weekends while also supporting the couple’s ability to work remotely during the week. The smaller scale allowed us to create intimate, highly considered spaces that the owners were excited to see come to life.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?:
One project required the integration of an extensive steel structure to maximize lake-facing glazing in the living area. Coordinating the steel, window systems, and interior finishes presented a new challenge, requiring close communication with the engineer and builder to ensure the design was executed flawlessly.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?:
Our integration within Muskoka Lumber, a building supplies and custom millwork retailer, allows us to work closely with clients from start to finish. We also frequently collaborate with interior designers to further refine and complete projects in a way that feels cohesive and unique.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?:
We aim to expand our services to better support our clients while continuing to differentiate ourselves in an ever-evolving market.

Your most treasured possession?:
My father’s engraved hunting rifle, which I received when he passed away.

Your favourite holiday destination?:
My wife’s family cottage on a small lake in Northern Ontario.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?:
Hotel: JW Marriott the Rosseau in December
Restaurant: Crossroads in Rosseau, Ontario
Bar: Anywhere I can get together with friends and watch the game.

Your favourite book, film & song?:
Book: “The Martian,” by Andy Weir
Film: Any of the Oceans movies
Song: Any Classic Rock

Your favourite food and drink?:
Food: A good steak dinner
Drink: A good scotch

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?:
I enjoy going on hikes with my young family and watching the sense of adventure and curiosity develop in my kids.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would your alternative profession be?:
I would likely be in the hospitality industry—either working at or owning a fishing lodge in Northern Ontario.
