Tell us a little about your background in design:
I studied Architecture at Northumbria University in Newcastle and loved it. We had some fantastic lectures and the course was well recognised nationally for the talent it produced, with state-of-the-art facilities and access to the leading professionals at the time.

This gave me a great start when it came to building a career in Luxury Interior Design, but it’s only half the story. I had a deep passion for property and construction from a young age as my dad was a builder, and I would often go to sites with him.
This then grew when I started my own development projects and helped give me a good understanding of construction, in turn complimenting my design skills.

It was quickly apparent that the luxury residential sector of the market was where I wanted to specialise as I had a natural flair for these projects and serving of this type of Client.

How would you describe your personal design style?
I have an appreciation for all types of styles but the key for me is the quality of their execution.

I have been fortunate enough to work on a huge variety of luxury properties, including ultra-modern, Victorian, Georgian, Ski Chalets, Villas, etc. The era and style that resonates best with me are the grand Victorian properties that have been tastefully restored to their former glory with a modern twist. I feel this creates a beautiful balance of the character, historical features and proportions that the Victorians did so well whilst bringing them up to the modern standards of luxury living.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
We take design inspiration from everywhere. It could be a coffee shop which has installed a new take on reeded panelling or luxury hotels where they have installed detailed marble floor with inlay brass details.

We also as a team travel to international furniture shows allowing us to see the latest trends and designs from so many wonderful creative companies.

I feel travelling to new places is always inspiring and brings out the creative side to us as designers.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
As the global dominance of China’s exports reduces, many nations are once again looking to manufacture more in their own countries.
This is bringing certain location identities back into designs where locally crafted products are once again being valued by clients and designers alike. Along with this, the technology industries are changing the face of nearly everything. Making products more user-friendly and space-efficient.

There is a continuing shift for these technologies to be integrated into every part of our homes and modern way of living.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
Technology
Built to Last – moving away from the recent years of a throw away society.
Energy efficiency
Cost – with prices of materials, labour and shipping all increasing rapidly we will see a shift to ways that keep these costs to a minimum.
VR – Virtual reality is going to transform the way we see spaces and use them. I feel we will see a big demand for spaces to use VR and a reduction in the demand for other spaces that can now be done using a VR platform.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
Good quality design can reduce costs, create products that have a long life expectancy and really service the end user.

Take time to think and think out of the box, questioning always how things can be improved on and done differently. Collectively as designers if we do this we will continue to change the way people live for the better.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The Design Awards are important as it’s a fantastic way to bring different Studios together to celebrate achievements and design, helping build connections between everyone.

What projects are you currently working on?
We’re working on a wide variety of projects currently, from a number of complete turn-key new builds to existing property refurbishments and smaller FF&E projects requiring pre-Christmas installations.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
It’s incredibly difficult to choose a favourite project, as each project is special in its own way. We’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing Clients that have given us the freedom to design their homes into beautiful spaces.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
Each project usually encounters some form of challenge and we find that supply issues tend to be the biggest challenge we have to overcome, and working around them to keep projects moving on time.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
When we look at a finished room from a project, we find that every little detail makes that space, and it doesn’t always factor down to one product type. For example a Dining Room can have detail in the table base design, the fabrics on the dining chair, the statement light fitting, the wallpaper, the curtains with the leading edge trim – without a vast variety of products and suppliers available to us, our job wouldn’t be possible.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
We are celebrating another wonderful year of fantastic projects, clients and a growing design team. We aim to use this momentum to continue pushing to new heights in the next year with even more impressive projects on the horizon and some incredible events to further grow our team and company infrastructure.
