Tell us a little about your background in design:
I began my career in architectural engineering, where I gained a strong foundation in technical drawings, proportions, and spatial awareness. My first role after university was at a prestigious luxury design studio in London, where I had the opportunity to work on a wide range of high-profile projects, both locally and internationally, including in cities like Dubai.

Over the course of nine years, I collaborated on designs spanning various styles —from contemporary spaces with clean lines and neutral palettes, to properties rich in character and flair. My experience also included working on classic and art deco designs, which helped me refine my versatility and adapt to the unique needs of each client.

In 2019, I co-founded West Nine Studio, with the goal of developing my own design philosophy while continuing to push creative boundaries and explore new possibilities in the world of design.

How would you describe your personal design style?
My design approach is a combination of three key elements: the client’s personal style, the property’s character, and my own design vision.
First, I pay close attention to the client’s preferences by observing their clothing, the fabrics and colours they gravitate towards, and how they incorporate texture into their wardrobe. This helps me understand their tastes and ensures that the design is a reflection of their personality.

Next, I consider the property itself, paying respect to its heritage and architectural features. I look at details like cornices, ceiling mouldings, and the amount of natural light it receives. I also assess whether a light colour palette would enhance the space and take into account the surrounding area’s colours and textures to ensure cohesion with the environment.

Finally, I bring my own style into the design, focusing on natural colour palettes, uncluttered spaces, and the use of wood, metals, and organic materials. I draw inspiration from the outdoors aiming to create designs that are timeless, durable, and always in harmony.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
Inspiration comes from a variety of sources, with being well-informed at the core of it. I draw inspiration from the constant flow of new ideas, trends, and innovations happening across different industries. Staying updated on emerging materials, technologies, and design applications allows me to incorporate fresh elements into work.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
I don’t believe there is a single defining style at the moment. Instead, the focus is shifting more towards wellbeing, where the design is about creating spaces that promote a sense of peace and emotional connection. This often translates into uncluttered, serene environments that foster calm and joy. Colour palettes are a big part of this—people are drawn to tones that evoke different emotions as they move through various rooms, with each space offering an experience while maintaining a cohesive, harmonious flow.

Design is evolving to create environments with a sense of continuity, where every element feels intricately tied to a larger narrative or theme.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.
Sustainable and long-lasting materials are essential for creating designs that have a positive environmental impact and stand the test of time. I believe in designing without chasing trends, focusing instead on timeless aesthetics and functionality. The integration of new technologies is also crucial, as they offer innovative ways to enhance design, efficiency, and user experience. Supporting artisans and preserving craftsmanship is another key theme, as it not only celebrates unique, handmade work but also helps sustain local economies and traditional skills.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?
Ensure you have a clear understanding of the budget from the outset and make informed decisions about where to allocate funds. Prioritise spending on high-quality materials that will have a lasting impact on the design and overall longevity of the space or product.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
The International Design & Architecture Awards provide an excellent platform for exposure, offering significant visibility to anyone involved in design. The voting process itself is a testament to the transparency and credibility of the awards. It’s a valuable opportunity to showcase your work, gain recognition, and connect with like-minded professionals and industry leaders.

What projects are you currently working on?
One of the most exciting projects West Nine Studio are currently working on, set for completion in March next year, is a Grade II listed detached property in St. John’s Wood. The clients, a retired couple from Yorkshire, have a strong appreciation for quality and texture. For this project, we’ve selected luxurious materials such as mohair, wool, and cashmere, creating a rich, tactile experience throughout the space. The combination of these materials with the property’s historical features promises to deliver a sophisticated yet comfortable environment that reflects both the clients’ tastes and the property’s heritage.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
I thoroughly enjoyed working on the project submitted for this award. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the project presented complex structural challenges and hurdles related to obtaining the necessary permits for alterations. Without seeing the original demolition and construction plans, it’s difficult to fully appreciate the extent of the transformation—how the rooms were reconfigured and reconnected. What I loved most about this project was the opportunity to explore alternative layouts and push the boundaries of what the client thought was possible, ultimately exceeding their expectations and delivering a space that surpassed their vision.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
I worked on a new build project in Highgate featuring very contemporary architecture, with floor-to-ceiling glazed walls that are either angled or tilted. The challenge in this design was creating furniture layouts that complemented the unique, dynamic structure while maintaining a sense of balance and harmony. I focused on using symmetry and classical proportions to bring a sense of order and elegance to the space, ensuring the modern architecture and the furniture design worked seamlessly together.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies
Lighting is essential to completing any project, serving as both a functional and sculptural element. It adds depth and dimension to a space while enhancing its practicality through well-placed task lighting. Thoughtfully chosen lighting not only creates the desired atmosphere but also accentuates the colours and textures of the surrounding materials, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
My goal for the next twelve months is to secure a win at The International Design & Architecture Awards and elevate the studio to an international stage. As a young, driven team, we are passionate about showcasing our creativity and expertise, and we’re eager to demonstrate that we belong at the highest level of the industry.

Your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possession is my home, lovingly renovated in 2022. As part of the transformation, we added an extension featuring bi-folding doors and a large skylight in the family room. This created a seamless connection between our main living space and the garden, flooding the room with natural light.

What I love most about my home is the sense of peace and security it brings. On sunny days, I delight in gazing up at the sky through the skylight, and with each season, I find joy in rearranging the furniture. Whether it’s opening up the space to embrace the garden view or creating a cozy haven around the fireplace, my home adapts to my moods and needs.

It’s more than a house—it’s a reflection of my journey and a place where I truly feel at ease.

Your favourite holiday destination?
My favourite holiday destinations are those that combine adventure with rich cultural experiences, such as the vibrant landscapes of Southeast Asia or the dynamic charm of South America. I’m drawn to places with fascinating histories, colourful local traditions, and breathtaking natural beauty.

There’s something magical about immersing myself in ancient temples, lively street markets, or remote rainforests. For me, travel is not just about seeing new places but about connecting with their stories and uncovering hidden gems that leave a lasting impression.

Your favourite hotel, restaurant & bar?
Hotel: Costes Paris
Restaurant: Cafe Royal London
Bar: The Ned bar

Your favourite book, film & song?
I don’t have a single favourite book, as I enjoy exploring a variety of genres. I’m particularly drawn to historical fiction, mystery, and political thrillers. One example is A Gentleman in Moscow, which captivates me with its rich storytelling, nuanced characters, and a unique perspective on history.
When it comes to films, my favourite childhood movie was Mulan. Her courage, self-reliance, and determination to defy societal expectations inspired me. Mulan embodies the strength and resilience we all aspire to embrace.

Your favourite food and drink?
My favourite food is homemade Gujarati cuisine, especially when it’s lovingly prepared by my mum or grandmother. Their dishes are a comforting blend of rich, vibrant flavours that instantly transport me back to my childhood.

Beyond that, I love exploring spicy dishes from around the world. Whether it’s the bold heat of Mexican tacos, the aromatic spices of Thai curries, or a classic Italian pasta paired with a crisp glass of white wine. For me, food is not just about taste—it’s about past stories and creating new memories.

Your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
My preferred way to spend an afternoon depends on the weather. In the summer, I enjoy taking leisurely walks, flying a drone in the park, and unwinding with a glass of wine. On rainy days, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book, wrapped in a cozy blanket, with a cup of coffee in hand and the soothing warmth of a crackling fireplace.

If you weren’t in this sector, what would you alternative profession be?
I’ve known since I was 10 years old that I would build a career in this field. My father, a contractor, once took me to a project in Kensington, and I was instantly mesmerized. The towering ceilings, walls lined with luxurious red damask fabric, and the intricately carved cornices left me in awe. It was also the first time I encountered a music room—a space designed with such care and purpose that it felt almost magical.

That visit sparked something in me. The artistry, attention to detail, and sheer craftsmanship inspired a fascination that has stayed with me ever since.

Anything else interesting?
Bringing a project to life is always a collective achievement, relying on the expertise and dedication of many talented professionals. From structural engineers and M&E consultants to fabricators, skilled tradespeople, specialists, and commercial managers, every role is essential.

A successful project is never the result of one person’s effort—it’s the product of collaboration, where each contributor brings their unique skills and perspective. We’re fortunate to have an exceptional team at West Nine Studio and a strong support network, working to turn vision into reality. Together, we transform ideas into spaces that inspire and endure.
