Shortlisted: Living Space - Europe Award

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026

This four-storey family residence has been comprehensively reimagined by Serpil Senyuz Interiors, under the direction of architect Serpil Senyuz Kut, who sought to merge modern simplicity with natural materials and an abundance of daylight. Formerly defined by dark timber cladding, inward-facing rooms and restricted openings, the property lacked a visual and spatial connection to its dramatic alpine environment. Through a complete redesign that retained only the structural walls and the fixed kitchen core, Serpil Senyuz Kut transformed the building into a contemporary retreat in which landscape and architecture are closely interwoven.

Expansive glazed façades now dissolve the boundaries between interior space and the surrounding mountains, inviting shifting daylight across all levels. A restrained palette of wood, stone and minimalist detailing introduces cohesion and quiet refinement, allowing light, volume and proportion rather than ornamentation to define the character of the home.

The reconfigured plan enhances circulation while creating a series of carefully framed views that connect every living space with the exterior. Terraces and outdoor areas have been conceived as extensions of the interior, supporting everyday life as well as social gatherings and encouraging continuous engagement with the landscape.

Internally, each floor has been organised to respond to the family’s routines. The entrance level accommodates informal family activities and children’s spaces, while the principal living areas occupy the garden floor, described by the architect as the heart of the home. Here, double-height volumes, a winter garden, workspaces and a generous kitchen foster communal living. The upper level is dedicated to the parents, providing a quiet retreat.

The completed project demonstrates the architect’s ability to balance clarity with expression, achieving a home that is both contemporary and deeply personal, shaped by the lived experience and aspirations of its inhabitants.
