Tell us a little about your background in design:

I have been in the design industry for 30+years after completing my studies in the US.  Initially I worked as an Interior designer within architectural practices, both in the USA and then in New Zealand. This provided extensive experience into collaborative design and working as part of a large team on projects of scale in retail and hospitality.  20 years ago Space Studio was established as a bespoke Interior studio focussed on hospitality design. This work has taken me throughout the Pacific region designing and delivering interiors on hotels and resorts.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My personal style tends towards creating spaces that reflect relaxed luxury with a focus on texture, scale and organic detail.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

As each project Is so varied, inspiration can come from a variety of sources. Responding to and creating a connection with the locale to enhance one’s experience of place Is central to my approach. Researching and understanding social, cultural, historical and geographic context creates the narrative that inspires and informs the design.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Design is now about creating a space in which people feel relaxed but engaged. The term “quiet luxury” is often used. I prefer “Relaxed Luxury” which speaks to a layered design solution encompassing depth of tone, texture, colour, and lighting.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

1) Lighting design that can transform spaces at different times of the day and night. 2) Unique colour combinations. 3) Layered planning design detailing. 4) Variation of scale in the application of pattern and texture. 5) Connecting the Inside and the outside – bringing the outside In.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Design with authenticity.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The awards are important as they showcase the diversity of design across the world and celebrate the skill and work of designers worldwide.

What projects are you currently working on?

We are currently working on a number of beach resort hotels in the pacific region and alpine areas around Queenstown.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

One of my favourite projects over the years was the design of the Six Senses Resort in Fiji. The operator’s vision for a resort that was relaxed yet luxurious and created authentic memorable moments of their time in Fiji provided for some interesting design discussions. Working In close collaboration with the hotel team in this pristine environment to create unique experiences was truly memorable.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Delivering a 5 star rated,  300 room hotel in Port Moresby Papua New Guinea was our most challenging project to date.  The highly detailed project required extensive coordination with the site team and the sourcing and supply of materials, FFE and OSE into PNG was  challenge throughout the project.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

3D visualisations of spaces throughout the design phases is critical to us.

With respect to products – we are always open to new product.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

We aim to deliver on 3 significant resort projects through this year in the Pacific.
