In a remarkable collaboration, Studio Moren & G.A Group have reimagined what a 1 Hotel in Mayfair should embody, focusing on craftsmanship, natural materials, and a profound celebration of nature. The design challenge set for G.A Group was to create a space that is not only comfortable and tranquil but also exudes a refined, pared-back aesthetic with meticulous attention to detail. This vision was brought to life through the combined efforts of skilled artisans and creators, ensuring authenticity in every element of the design.

The project encompasses both a new-build and a conversion of an existing structure, resulting in significant savings in embodied energy, carbon emissions, and site waste. By integrating the existing structural systems and retaining the majority of the building, rather than opting for a complete rebuild, the project met ambitious sustainability targets. The complexities of the existing structure, with its varied forms of construction and disparate floor levels, were skilfully navigated to create a workable and harmonious design.

The hotel, featuring 181 guestrooms, retained over 80% of its original structure, saving approximately 4,200 tonnes of carbon. Reclaimed metal floor tiles, among other sustainably sourced and recycled materials, were utilized throughout the design, underscoring the commitment to environmental responsibility.

A conscious effort was made to create large open-plan areas on the ground floor by knocking down numerous smaller rooms and segregated spaces. The lobby, designed with raw edge stone fins as subtle dividers, offers a free-flowing layout that allows guests to navigate effortlessly. The reception desk is strategically positioned to be immediately visible upon entry, enhancing the welcoming ambiance.

The bar, ‘Dover Yard,’ seamlessly connects to the hotel’s internal circulation through thoughtfully styled full-height shelving. This area not only serves as a visual link but also encourages social interaction, with the large bar counter adding a theatrical and personal touch to the guest experience.

The design of 1 Hotel Mayfair, created by G.A Group with Studio Moren as Hotel Architect, is distinguished by its ability to provide a serene retreat from the bustling city, offering guests a sanctuary to unwind and rejuvenate. Celebrating craftsmanship and the talents of local artisans, the space features intricately crafted elements that invite admiration and conversation. The use of earthy and natural tones integrates the hotel seamlessly with its surrounding park, fostering a deep connection between the built environment and nature.
