Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc)

Originally from County Kildare, Ireland, where my passion for art and design was nurtured from a young age. I pursued my studies in Interior Architecture at the Dublin Institute of Technology. In 2007, I moved to London to further my career in interior design, honing my skills at esteemed studios. In 2013, I co-founded BradyWilliams with Emily Williams, focusing on luxury hospitality projects.

Recently, I launched Studio Shayne Brady, an evolution of my personal journey and creative approach over the past two decades. The studio reflects my belief in creating thought-driven interiors that delight and inspire, and I’m proud to lead a talented team of 20 multi-disciplinary designers and interior architects from our base in Bloomsbury.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is theatrical and dramatic, characterized by a layered approach to materiality. I aim to create spaces that evoke emotion and offer an immersive experience, blending historical references with contemporary sensibilities.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Inspiration comes from various sources: the nature, history, art, the stories of people, the vibrancy of travel. I also draw from the rich tapestry of global cultures and the stories they tell.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Our goal is to expand our international portfolio, continue fostering creativity within our team, and push the boundaries of hospitality design to create memorable experiences.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Design is increasingly embracing sustainability, inclusivity, and authenticity. There’s a shift towards creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also socially and environmentally responsible. Spaces that will stand the test of time – legacies.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future.

Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity
Flexibility and adaptability in design
Technological integration
Wellness and mental health considerations
Sustainability and eco-consciousness

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to designing, what would it be?

Always design with empathy. Understand the needs and experiences of those who will inhabit the space, and let that guide your creative process.

How important are The International Hotel & Property Awards?

These awards are significant as they recognize excellence and innovation in our industry. They provide a platform to celebrate outstanding design and inspire continued creativity.

Your most treasured possession?

I have an antique nursing chair from my grandmother’s farmhouse reupholstered in my bedroom which always reminds me of family and my roots every day. Also, my childhood blanket I have framed as a piece of art – it evokes carefree days every time I see it.

What projects are you currently working on?

We’re working on several exciting projects, including the revival of Simpson’s in the Strand with Jeremy King and collaborations with iconic brands like Waldorf Astoria.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?

I don’t have any favourites as each design is so unique.
Designing The Aubrey at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park was a highlight. It allowed us to explore the Aesthetic Movement and Japanism, creating a space that celebrates late-night izakaya culture but set firmly within an iconic London heritage space.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

Each project has challenges, but transforming historic venues like Gallery at The Savoy required balancing preservation with innovation, ensuring the space honoured its legacy while offering a contemporary experience, all while working within a live environment.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing? E.g. Lighting companies, furniture companies

Quality lighting solutions are indispensable; they set the mood and define spaces. Additionally, bespoke furniture and artisanal materials bring uniqueness and character to our designs.
