Shortlisted: Hotel Under 200 Rooms Global Award

The International Hotel & Property Awards 2025

Set on the campus of a historic 19th-century train terminal in the foothills of the Appalachians, this 127-room hotel—designed in collaboration with Trestle Studio—offers a distinctive homage to the golden age of American railway travel. Of the total accommodations, 25 suites are housed within meticulously restored 1920s and 1960s Pullman train carriages, offering guests a rare and immersive lodging experience.

Drawing inspiration from both the property’s origins as a Southern Railway station—now listed on the National Register of Historic Places—and the chalet-style retreats that once dotted the American mountain landscape, the hotel blends historic reverence with refined modernity. The Victorian-era train cars are outfitted with period details such as bentwood dining chairs, Tiffany-glass pendant lights, and pinch-pleat curtains, offset by Missoni-print textiles that echo the surrounding terrain. In contrast, the Mid-Century Mod carriages feature vibrant palettes of rose, lilac, and lime, retro cantilevered seating, and bespoke wallcoverings that subtly reference local flora.

Throughout both typologies, custom furnishings—scalloped king beds, plush sleeper sofas, and houndstooth-inspired carpeting—bridge past and present. Bathrooms offer light, contemporary contrast with green marble vanities and brass petal-like lighting.

A procession of indoor and outdoor gathering spaces—anchored by a train-style lobby, alpine-surrounded pool, and French Nouveau-inspired gardens—enhances the immersive guest journey. Public amenities are housed in a 1973-era structure adjacent to the original terminal. Acquired by new ownership in 2021, the revitalized property now invites guests to experience a thoughtful reinterpretation of America’s railway heritage—an inspired, nostalgic escape designed for modern adventurers.
