The CBS headquarters, famously known as “Black Rock” and designed by Eero Saarinen, has been an iconic fixture in Midtown Manhattan since its completion in 1965. As part of a recent renovation, Vocon and MdeAS Architects were tasked with updating the plaza, ground floor, and lower levels to attract tenants while preserving the building’s midcentury modern style. Although the building’s exterior is protected as a New York City landmark, the interiors are not. Despite this, the design teams remained faithful to Saarinen’s vision, opting for subtle yet impactful modifications.

The International Design & Architecture Awards 2025
A key element of this renovation was the lighting, crafted by the design firm VISO. The centerpiece of their work is a dramatic central light canopy that complements Saarinen’s architectural features while bringing fresh illumination to the vast ceiling. VISO’s approach to lighting was not only aesthetic but also highly functional. They meticulously curated each fixture to ensure easy maintenance, even creating a custom tool for efficient bulb replacement, reducing the labor required for upkeep.
Sofia Juperius, Vocon’s Design Director, emphasised the importance of respecting the building’s legacy, with the goal of making meaningful changes that enhance both form and function. VISO’s contribution was integral to maintaining the integrity of Saarinen’s design while introducing modern conveniences that suit the demands of today’s tenants.
