Benisouk
Benisouk has been shortlisted for Flooring: Carpet / Rug Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2021.
Benisouk’s Blooming Field piece is a Moroccan rug 100% handmade by a Master Artisan in Morocco in the Mrirt Tribe. This rug is made from prestigious New Zealand wool, a pure and extra virgin wool, following traditional Moroccan weaving. Each rug gives testament to an individual who strives to achieve great things in their life, preserving an ancestral art dating back to the Paleolithic era. The artist, in daily contact with the wilderness of the mountains of the Moroccan Atlas, weaves the Zen of the Middle Atlas into this rug so that you can feel a greater connection to nature.
This treasure has been crafted using ancient techniques, passed down from mother to daughter, time immemorial. The rug design represents the colourful fields of the artisan’s village – the green colour was inspired by lighter green olive trees that are very present in the Middle Atlas of Morocco, with hills and mountains presented in orange and black visible on the edges. Bright colours were inspired by the spring season when flowers are blooming and there are spectacular views across of fields, especially lavender. In this field, there is a tree drawn with geometrical shapes mixed with purple and green colours which accentuate the impression of wild nature. The craftsman has used different shades of dark green that contrast with the beige that represents the wheat fields as spring ends and summer begins.
Here Benisouk honours the craftsmanship of the luxury Mrirt rug, which is woven only by the most accomplished artisans who are the custodian of rare ancestral weaving and knotting techniques that take longer to perform compared to other Berber rugs. The prestigious New Zealand wool used is a pure and extra virgin wool, that has never been spun into yarn or processed. This represents only 5% of the world wool’s production and is considered the pinnacle of wool in terms of quality, offering unparalleled comfort and warmth while also being naturally fire-resistant, stain-resistant and sound-insulating. It is through the appreciation of the finest that nature has to offer that Zen is believed to be passed on.
This rug brings life within its walls and acts as a talisman for pleasures, dreams, plans and relationships. It is designed to share the deep attachments rugs have in Berber society as the centre of family life. For Benisouk, art such as this is about sharing culture and traditions with people around the world and being inspired by the artistic achievements from different backgrounds.
