Blandings by Langstaff Ellis

Langstaff Ellis have been shortlisted for Kitchen Design Over £50,000 Award in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2023.

Langstaff Ellis has recently completed a kitchen design project for an Art Deco villa in Oxfordshire, England. The property, which underwent extensive renovation and modernisation, was given a new lease of life as a multi-level family home. The owners wanted a generous family kitchen that was both modern and functional, yet still sympathetic to the property’s Art Deco roots.

Langstaff Ellis rose to the challenge by creating a dramatic yet understated design. The kitchen was given a monochrome palette of jet black and white, with flat-panel cabinetry and a soft sheen painted finish. The brushed stainless steel surfaces and splashback added an industrial feel, which worked well beneath the structural steel of the kitchen. The vast expanse of steel also reflected custom-designed mood lighting, which was installed with entertaining in mind.

One of the most striking aspects of the design was the stainless steel island. From every angle, it changed appearance, reflecting dark cabinetry from the front, lush green gardens from the back, and whichever mood lighting was selected from above. The subtle brushed finish softened reflections and gently diffused light for a sophisticated feel.

The design was carefully considered and planned, with ducting installed directly into the floor, meaning no recirculation was required. This ensured that there was no compromise on the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. High-end kitchen appliances from Bora and Gaggenau completed the look, making it not only beautiful but also functional.

The Langstaff Ellis design team was keen to avoid an Art Deco pastiche and to create a design that was subtle and simple yet striking. The result is a kitchen that complements the property’s Art Deco arches and other features, without overpowering them.

The owners of the property are thrilled with their new kitchen, which is not only a beautiful space but also highly functional for family life and entertaining. This latest project from Langstaff Ellis showcases the company’s talent for creating sophisticated and minimalist designs that are sympathetic to the original features of a property.
