Tell us a little about your background in design:
I started my career in TV and moved into Interior Design 9 years ago. I was lucky enough to learn from my mother and experience firsthand how to design High-End residences globally. I undertook detailed technical drawing courses and worked hard to learn the ropes and all aspects of running a successful Interior Design business.

How would you describe your personal design style?
That’s a difficult question as I am always evolving my own personal design style. I am probably my own worst client, particularly when designing my own home. Having said that, I love warm tones and colours with an earthy look and texture.

Where does your design inspiration come from?
I am constantly inspired by the world we live in, particularly on my travels overseas. This comes not only from the incredibly diverse architecture, but cuisine, style and culture. I love walking around a new city and immersing myself in its culture, meeting people and understanding their way of living.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?
People are still looking for a more homely feel- even in hospitality, people are looking for a ‘home away from home’.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2023 and beyond.

  • Sustainability is a recurring theme. Although it has been a popular topic in the industry for some time, it has always been an important part of design for Ward & Co.
  • This includes the reuse of existing materials, consideration on supplier logistics and shipping, using local resources as much as possible and putting money back into the local economy by employing local artisans and tradespeople. This in turn impacts the the environment and reduces our carbon emissions.
  • How clients live and use their space is also a vital part of design, as well as being able to adapt as a design studio to meet clients’ ever changing style and needs.
  • Organic shapes and natural materials
  • Moving away from wallpapers to a more natural looking Plaster effect on walls

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Find your starting point, whether it’s a patterned fabrc, piece of artwork or furniture. Develop from that and this will help the colour thread and narrative begin.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?
Very, it provides a platform for the design industry to demonstrate their expertise.

What projects are you currently working on?
Our current projects are currently split between London and the Caribbean. These are predominately a mix of large-scale refurbishments and new builds.

What was your favourite project to work on and why?
For me, every project is different and I have a favourite aspect to all of our projects. As an example, my favourite element from Villa Papillon, a large villa we designed in Antigua, was the ability to work with the natural landscape; striking a balance between a neutral palette that wouldn’t detract from the views, whilst creating an inviting contemporary design that stays with you long after you have left.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?
My current one, doing up my own property – I am my own worst client! I keep changing my mind

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?
A good reliable supply chain.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?
To continue developing a successful design company in London and the Caribbean. I am also passionate about supporting up-and-coming, brilliant designers in the industry and installing and delivering large global projects seamlessly.
